Lawrence Wones Sledge was the second of four children born to the late Bules Sledge and Mary Sledge on December 6, 1942 in Lanett, Alabama. He entered eternal rest on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York after a brief illness.
Lawrence was educated at Lanier High School in Lanett Alabama where he became proficient playing the trumpet, basketball, and in voice. He formed a band in Brooklyn known as the Jades that performed frequently. He attended Brooklyn College for a few years to further his education. He retired from the NYC Transit Authority three years ago.
He joined Pilgrim Baptist Church in Lanett at an early age and was recognized by the Church for his musical abilities.
Lawrence spent most of his adult years residing in Brooklyn-the city that he dearly loved. This is where he met and married Vivian Davis formerly of Rome Georgia. This union produced two sons, Terrence Sledge and Vernon Sledge and a daughter, Torry Sledge..
His father, Bules Sledge preceded him in death in 1999.
Lawrence leaves to celebrate his life and cherish his memories: his mother, Mary Jones Sledge of Lanett, Alabama; his wife, Vivian D. Sledge of Jonesboro, Georgia; son, Terrence R. Sledge of Jonesboro, Georgia; son, Vernon C. Sledge (Christine) of Austin, Texas; daughter, Torry R. Sledge of Jonesboro, Georgia; grandsons, Kevin and Deion Sledge of Austin, Texas; granddaughters, Kayla L. Bush and Chandler E. Bush-Sledge of Jonesboro, Georgia; brother, Mitchell Sledge of Atlanta, Georgia; sisters, Otheria (Ann) Sledge and Julia McLemore of Lanett, Alabama; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, devoted friends and classmates.
