In loving memory of

Alec P. Karter

Of Brookfield, Wisconsin died peacefully in his sleep early this past Sunday morning, September 22, 2013 at the age of 66.

Alec was the loving father of four girls: Lindsay (Dan) Miller of Dellwood, Minnesota; Alexis Karter of Chicago, Illinois; Calli Karter of St. Paul, Minnesota; and Kristin Karter of Fort Myers, Florida. Loving grandfather of Taylor and Karter Miller; and brother of Eleni (Reider) Hoff and Satira (Dr. George) Mekras. He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Mary Karter. His numerous dear friends from childhood to adulthood were an extension of his family.

Born in December of 1946 at Waukesha Memorial Hospital, Alec spent most of his life in Brookfield. He graduated from Brookfield Central High School, class of 1965; where his children went on to graduate from as well. His family and friends called him: "Mr. Brookfield".

Alec graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and began his lifelong love for the Wisconsin Badgers; eventually traveling all over the country with his daughters and friends to support his team, including attending numerous Rose Bowls and even taking his family to Hawaii for games.

Alec was the proud owner of Karter's Coffee Shop and Half Pound Pub for over 25 years before he went into the commercial real estate industry forming Karter Commercial. Alec had many passions over the years as a proud member and leader of several associations.

Alec loved to travel, but his fondest times were spent with his greatest love, his four daughters. Together they shared amazing experiences, quality time and unforgettable memories. His dedication, love and loyalty will live on forever through his children.

Alec was known to many as "The Best Guy I know". All who knew him, loved him. He devoted his life to his family and friends. Those memories he created for them will survive him for generations to come.

We love you and miss you, Dad.

"Al was a freshman at Brookfield Central when I was a senior. The senior "women" rather took the freshman "boys" under our wing and did our best to help them navigate the hallowed halls of Central. I last saw Al in May 2012 at the Athletic Hall of Fame dinner at Westmoor. We shared memories, talked about our families, and laughed a lot. My sympathy to his family on the loss of a very good man."

"I spent my entire childhood living right next door to Alec, Leni, Tia, and Mr. and Mrs. Karter. So many wonderful memories of great neighbors and even greater friends including Alec being my very first childhood crush. No matter how many years had passed every time I would run into Alec it was always such fun reminiscing about our old neighborhood antics and block parties! My deepest sympathies go to his daughters, sisters, and entire family. May the wonderful memories you have sustain you through this most difficult time."

"Al and I met at Brookfield Central playing football. Through those years we spent alot of time together at his house, after school. Al was always easy to be around...fun to be around. In 1966 I moved from Brookfield to California and eventually to Oregon. Over the years it was Alec that got me back to Brookfield for a couple of class reunions, a Coach Petruska benefit golf tournament and more recently to join him and his friends at a couple of Badger games. I was fortunate to be with Alec this month at the Wisconsin-Arizona State game. When it was over and I was leaving, I hugged this wonderful man; thanked him for always thinking of me and told him that I loved him. We all loved him...Alec drew that emotion out of everyone simply by being who he always was. He left us too soon but with memories that will live on. My deepest sympathies to his Family."

"We spent many a Saturday with our family at Karters pub eating peanuts and throwing the shells on the floor! Karters were next door neighbors to us for many years and they were a great & loving family. Our condolences and prayers to the many lives he touched with his loving spirit."

"Alec was a wonderful human being. I have known him since High School, but got to know him well in the latter years. He was like by all and knew everyone in the area. In fact, he was adopted by our group of guys from the class of 67 about 10 years ago. A week ago we all came back from Arizona, so it is hard to believe that Alec will not be around at future Badger games. Go Bucky!...Al would have liked that send off.."

"I only had the pleasure of spending time with Alec on a few occasions. It was still easy to see his ability to light up any room with his smile and stories. His dedication to his daughters never went unnoticed. A True Father!"

"Alec was one of those people who always had something nice to say about anybody. Also, I don't recall ever mentioning a name to him without hearing " Oh yeah, I know him". He would then go on to describe something interesting - always positive - about that person. I detected no guile in the man - he was always open and approachable and kind. I will miss him and pray for him. My sincere sympathies to Alec's family."
