Vernon L. Weirup, 81, of Maquoketa, Iowa, died on Tuesday morning, January 7, 2014, at his home in rural Maquoketa.
A celebration of Vernon's life will be held at 2 P.M., Friday, January 10, 2014 at the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M. on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial will be at the Buckhorn Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, Iowa.
Vernon Leo Weirup was born on July 5, 1932 in Jackson County, Iowa, to Arthur and Nina (Busch) Weirup. He attended Buckhorn Country School and was a 1949 graduate of Maquoketa High School. He was an Army veteran serving his country during the Korean Conflict. He married Patricia Ann Bock on January 30, 1955 in Maquoketa, Iowa.
Upon receiving an honorable discharge, Vernon farmed for five years. For the next eight years he worked as a police officer for the Maquoketa Police Department. He then worked as a Brinks driver for eight years and lastly as a forklift operator for Red Jacket in Davenport for over 20 years.
Vernon was a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge, Buckhorn Community Club, Maquoketa American Legion Post #75 and the Maquoketa VFW Post #3633 O'Connor-Regenwether. In November of 2012 he was given a trip on the Honor Flight.
Vernon enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, especially Sheepshead, doing yard work and gardening. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan.
Those left to honor Vernon's memory include his wife, Patricia Weirup of Maquoketa, IA; children, Barbara Milburn of Long Grove, IA, Randy (Susan) Weirup of Maquoketa, IA, and Brenda Lannom of Kent, WA; 5 grandchildren, Adam, Chad, and Chris Weirup, Stephanie and Kristen Milburn; 7 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Wilma Reichling of Maquoketa, IA, Arla (John) Lubben of Baldwin, IA, and Laveta Brady of Clinton, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters Vernetta and Naomi, and a brother Everett.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the Waterford Buckhorn Cemetery Association or the charity of the donor's choice.
