MADISON - David John Vergeront died on May 25, 2014 of natural causes at the age of 69.
David received a Bachelor of Science degree from UW Madison in 1967 and a law degree from UW Law School in 1970. He was proud to be a Badger and was a big supporter of UW's Athletic Department.
David took great joy in helping others, giving of himself with no thought of any reward. The satisfaction of the act of helping was more than sufficient. Family was everything to him and he cherished the times when he and his family would gather together to celebrate the various milestones of his parents, siblings, children and grandchildren.
David retired from the practice of law in 2010. During his 40 years of practice, he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues not only for his great legal abilities but also for the integrity that was a hallmark of his practice.
He is survived by his three children, Meg Vergeront Klas (Kevin Klas), John W. Vergeront (Kathryn), and David E. Vergeront (Maria); his mother, Sallie Walker Jones Vergeront; his six siblings, Margaret J. Vergeront (Michael Weiden), Kim Vergeront (Andy Cohn), Jeanne Vergeront (Andrew Dick), Thomas Vergeront, Julie Vergeront (Bob Vinton) and Andrew Vergeront (Tammy); and his 5 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, John G. Vergeront.
David will be greatly missed by family and friends.
A memorial service to celebrate David's life will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Cress Funeral Services, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, Wisconsin. Family will greet friends one hour prior to service. Please share your memories at www.cressfuneralservice.com

"During his many years representing the interests of the State of Wisconsin as an employer, David was an ardent advocate who enjoyed his role. He was also a very caring guy with a sense of humor that often brought a smile to my face. It was a privilege, David."

"I have known David since 1977 when I started as an associate lawyer at what was then called Davis, Kuelthau, Vergeront, Stover and Leichtfuss. David soon became my favorite lawyer. He was the hardest worker in the firm and his sense of humor was without equal. I learned a lot from him. "

"David and I met when we lived in an apartment complex waiting for our first homes to be built. We carpooled to work and were friends for over 4o years. I will miss his sense of humor, his insight into Badger sports, and political opinions but most of all I will miss him as a friend. My sympathy to all of his family"
Peter Davis wrote on Jun 2, 2014:
"David cared. About the law, his family, friends and co-workers. I was one of many who he reached out to in difficult times. But not to be lost when remembering David is his sense of humor. Among many things, I'll miss our occasionally borderline inappropriate candid conversations about a variety of topics.

"Dave was a classmate and fraternity brother when we both attended UW in the 1960's. I'm sorry to hear of his passing, but will always remember him as one of the nicest people I've ever known. He always had time to hear what you said, and took a genuine interest in everyone he knew. My sincerest condolences to his family."

"David worked very hard on all the appeals he represented me on and always made sure I was properly prepared. He was a great friend and while I didn't enjoy appeals, I enjoyed working with David. We had a couple of very memorial hearings. I know David will be missed by the many people who worked with him."

"David was a friend as well as a coworker. I remember I was subpoenaed and was very concerned and David was there every inch of the way, telling them "No, she can't come back this afternoon" and supporting me during other classification audit appeals. I most remember his excellent salmon recipes. He and his smile will be greatly missed. "
