Barber wrote on Dec 23, 2015:

"First, to the family I am sorry for your loss! I've known Mike for about 10 years and I must say that he is one of the most respectful men I have met. I met him for the first time because he carried his Marine briefcase with pride and I had just got out of the Marines and started conversation about his briefcase. He has reminded me ever since that he knows I'm a Marine as well. He always greeted me and treated me with great respect just because that's who he was. He was funny and very talented in his work, he was something to see in the courtroom! Even Being on the opposite side of a case, as law enforcement, I learned more from "Shanks" than from any class or teacher about testifying. Not only in the courtroom watching him, he would pull me aside and give me pointers and tips or tell me I did well after just about every case I testified on, if he was present, wether he was involved in the case or not. Mike Shanks will be missed by myself and many others!! G. Barber"

Bill Taylor wrote on Dec 22, 2015:

"I offer condolences to Mike's family and would like them to know he is one of the most memorable people in my life, even though we last saw each at a USMC reunion in Las Vegas in about 1995 and last saw each other prior to that in 1967 in South Vietnam. Many nights Mike and I shared a fighting hole at the DMZ during Operation Prairie, where we experienced things which remain crystal clear to this day. Mike was a tough, quick thinker, and he never wasted time or motion; everything had a purpose. So long, my friend and fellow Marine . . . and Semper Fidelis. Bill Taylor"

"Beth & family: Annette and I send our deepest sympathies to the entire family. As you know, Mike was a wonderful lawyer but more importantly he was a gentleman in the courtroom who fought for his client's. His integrity was above reproach. I have lost a good friend. He told him knowledge and the love for law and caractor if this is what he wants will make him prominent in his feild of law. He has truly touched so many lives not only touch but has given so many people bye helping them get a 2nd chance in life. His passion for helping people and for the love of law and what it stood for and his family he loved so dearly. An the city he was proud of to serve an live in. And in the help and advice he shared with his colleagues. He loved and would crack a smile when u would say " SEMPER FI " for the country he served. I would. Like to think he's in heaven now helping god in his law work not that he needs it but to just let him do what he was truly great at. I know he's in heaven because l think our lord has a scale just like the one in law & justice and weighs the good an bad a balance of sort. Then mike tipped the scales for all the good he done here.An the good thing is we get to see him again sort of like a 2nd chance he gave so many of us. If we live right and ask to be forgiven.I for one will truly miss him he was a great friend. But i truly know he's in a better place. Good bye for now mike. " SEMPER FI " "
