JoAnn was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa and had previously served as a Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed reading, gardening, sewing, baking, taking road trips with Carl, and listening to KMAQ Radio, especially bingo. She was especially proud of and loved spending time with her grandchildren who affectionately called her "G-Nug".

Those left to honor JoAnn's memory include her husband Carl Muhlhausen Jr. of Maquoketa, IA; eight children, Carla (Lou) Behrend of DeWitt, IA, Christy (Paul) Heinrich of Maquoketa, IA, Cathy (Harold) Huebbe of Maquoketa, IA, Cheryl Fuller of Maquoketa, IA, Carl Alan "Al" (Nancy) Muhlhausen of Maquoketa, IA, Cindy (Steve) Starr of Maquoketa, IA, Clarissa Ferguson of Dubuque, IA, and Craig Muhlhausen of Maquoketa, IA; 20 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; a sister Dee Murphy of Cascade, IA; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, John and Carol Muhlhausen of Bettendorf, IA, and Phyllis Carmichael of Maquoketa, IA; one aunt, Letha Ritenour of Hopkinton, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
