"I met Dan Helm in 1972 on the basketball court at Franklin College where our friendship immediately blossomed. It seemed that our personalities were very similar which made it very easy to talk about a number of different issues and subjects and because of that we became college roomates, well that relationship continued from the time Dan was at Indiana University studying for his master degree,to his time in Huntingdon,PA as that schools basketball coach ,to Holland Mich. and finally back to Indianapolis at Pike High School. We would always celebrate his birthday and mine by having lunch at Alvins restaurant on 86th where we would again talk about life and how we were both getting older and adapting to the changing times. Its true that God works in mysterious ways because we talked the Friday before he passed and even though i will miss my friend dearly i was given the blessing of being able to say good-bye..God bless you Daniel "Helmsy" Helm.... Being at pike in his Classes and in the Training room prepared me very well for what i would deal with in college it put me at a skill level way above the other students entering into the program! He was also my friend i remember the first time Pike won state he and i had talked about stats of all players that we competed against and how we thought they would do against our players! He also would let me go to penn station with him during my search class! I send my deepest condolences to Mrs. Helm! I met her when they were dating and i just loved her as much as i loved him. They made the Best couple i thought they were made for each other and prayed that i had that type of love later on in life! "When I first came to Pike my sophomore year I was in Mr. Helm's athletic training class. He convinced me to become on of his student athletic trainers. He kept me busy all the way through the rest of my time there with just about every sport. I took more classes with him and spent a great deal of time with him. Mr. Helm was always humming a song or passing on his good mood to everyone around him. We'll miss him greatly but we'll never forget his upbeat attitude that made everyone enjoy being around him!"

"Mr. Helm had always been one of my favorite teachers. After having him for a class my freshman year of high school, I served as his teacher's assistant for two additional years. Mr. Helm was kind to every one of his students, and as an athlete, I can claim that he treated every athlete as if they were one of his own children. He took great care of anyone who stepped through the training room door, and he taught many students quite a few things about injuries and sports, but most importantly, he shared life's important lessons with those of who needed a bit of guidance. I'll always remember his hearty chuckle and his curly red hair, both of which brightened up my morning when I had 5am practice. For those students who never had a chance to know Mr. Helm, you truly missed out on one of the best people Pike had to offer."

Melissa Claycomb wrote on Nov 13, 2012:

"I never had the pleasure of having Mr. Helm in class. However, he knew me better than most teachers at Pike. He was always there to help care for all of my injuries. It never mattered how much pain I had going into the trining room he could always make me smile. Even taking bets about who hit the board which he was right and it usually was me. Mr. Helm was there after practice, before school, and even took time out of the school day to ice or tape or bandage any of the student athletes. He was an amazing teacher at Pike and will truely missed by more people than he would have thought. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family."

Catie Hall wrote on Nov 13, 2012:

"Due to my own laziness, everyday i would leave gym class early to allow myself more time to change. "But aren't the locker rooms locked?" my classmates would ask. and i would reply, "Nope, Mr. Helm unlocks 'em for me...we're buddies." While i never had the privelege of knowing him personally, Mr. Helm's cheerful smile and willingness to help left an impression on me. He will never know how many lives he touched with his kindness and generosity. He was truly an amazing man. "

During football season, Dan and I spent time together nearly every day working to make me a better player. We were even on the same intramural basketball team.
