"Charlene and family, My sincerest condolences. Joe was friend of mine from ND and I always enjoyed his wit and sarcasm. I could count on him for a good laugh, specially after a painful football game loss. He would give you that "look" and you were not sure whether he was serious or just working you over.. Indeed, I recently happened across that "look" in a short clip of Joe and Charlene from a May 1990 graduation party that I apparently brought a video camera to. The clip turned up as part of a video my father prepared for my surprise 40th birthday. While I will certainly miss seeing Joe at ND football games, I will think of him whenever my kids play that video (which they seem do often)."

Today I pulled out the class composite picture of Joe and his classmates when I was his 4th grade teacher in Naples. Even as a 9 year-old, Joe had that warm, engaging smile and a wonderful sense of humor. The kids loved to work and play with him because Joe was fair and respectful to others. As I read through the questbook, I can see that Joe carried those wonderful traits with him into adulthood. May the special memories you have of Joe give you comfort now and in the future. God's strength and peace be with each one of you. With love and sympathy,Mary Peck"

"Dearest Char, Ben, Ryan and Josie:From the entire Rahner clan - our deepest sympathies for the loss of your husband/ father, and our Cousin Joey.Joey was the easiest and sweetest kid you could ever be around. From his birth, he was a pleasure (in fairness and to be balanced, we must keep in mind that Andy was already in the picture, closest in age, and the largest comparison for Joe's easiness and sweetness, a major curve.....we also must keep in mind (from the Rahner perspective) that in those early years he had yet to be brainwashed into the Notre Dame fanatic/lunatic fringe, and therefore, was much more pleasurable for us civilized Penn State fans to be around.)Joey walked lightly on this earth. He always gave more than he took. He did this without keeping score or expecting something in return. Quick to smile and slow to anger. That is the Joey Vierhile we remember. Our Grampa Benjamin was a simple man. There was no flash to him. He had the quickest, truest smile you had ever seen, a belly chuckle laugh, all framed by twinkling eyes. He was an unbelieveable and constant kidder who had a nose to the grindstone work ethic. He never passed up an opportunity to help someone else, whether convenient or not. If greatness is measured in the number of lives touched in a meaningful way, then Grampa, although cut from simple cloth, was a great man. By that same yardstick - Joey was also a great man.We were so sorry to learn of the heaviness in Joey's world the past few years. That just doesn't seem possible to those who had known him so long. That was not Joey's true nature His was always a world of light and fun. Darkness just didn't belong. It has finally been banished. Joey will never be forgotten. He will always be remembered with the happiness that those memories unleash. May peace find you, and may your own loving memories find you whenever you need them to lighten your load - today, tomorrow, always. Your Loving Cousins,The Rahners "
