Dr. Richard ?Whitey? Linback

72 of Indianapolis passed away on February 23, 2009. He was born in Rensselaer, Indiana to the late Ervin and Evalyn Linback. He left Rensselaer to attend Indiana University and where he had a less than stellar academic start. His mother, being head of the draft board, arranged a little detour to the US Army after which he returned to Indiana University with a plan. Whitey, as his friends knew him, played baseball while attending IU and where he became a pitcher with a national reputation. He was premed at IU and was accepted at IU Medical School. He was also invited to tryout with the Chicago White Sox. He accepted the invitation and was offered a position with a White Sox minor league team. The decision was difficult but he chose medicine, ultimately becoming a Cardiologist. He started a practice known as Cardiology Associates and was involved with Community Hospital for many years.

Whitey had many friends from all walks of life and will be missed by all. He had many adventures including traveling around the world and always had many stories to share. He had suffered from a long illness and we know he will enjoy and deserve the new journey.

Friends will be gathering Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at the Leppert Mortuary, Nora chapel from 4:30 until 8:00 PM. Please join us to share stories and smiles, as Whitey would want it this way. You may sign the guest book, get directions, or make a contribution to the American Heart Association at www.leppertmortuary.com.

"To Whomever is left of Dick's family ~My thoughts turn back the pages of time to the 1970's when Dick was at the medical center and then went into private pracice at Community Hospital. He was a dear old friend and we shared many good times and a few not-so-good times. He would arrive in Bill's and my home on holidays with a homemade apple pie ~ always late because he wanted to be sure the pie was fresh. He was a special human being and shall be missed. May he rest in peace. "
