"In the late spring of 2008 Shelby and I had lunch together to catch up on her first year at DePauw. We talked in depth about all the years we spent together becoming friends, and not just as a student with her voice teacher. Although she loved her music and sang with such a lovely voice, she knew her greatest gift was in reaching people to try to make a positive impact on their lives. Shelby knew who she was; she knew what she wanted her life to be like. Her goals were high. I frequently would remind her what a classy lady she was. Her demeanor, her intelligence, her sincerity and her warmth define her essence. The genuine sweetness and caring that she truly felt for others leaves all of us with such a strong positive role model. My love for Shelby runs deep and I have so many precious memories of her. I am shocked and grieved beyond words at her passing. It will take a very long time for all of us who love her to adjust to this loss. But we will not, can not, forget her. She was in our lives so briefly but so purposely. My own life has been immensely enriched by having Shelby as a dear and honored friend. Thank you, Lisa, Carl and Lizzie for sharing her for so long with me. Bill and I extend our deepest sympathies to you as you adjust to this unbelievable loss. All my love, Jo "

"Carl, Lisa and Lizzie - Words cannot express the heartache we feel and have for your family. Shelby left us way before any of us were ready to say good-bye but she gave us memories to beautiful to forget. Hold tight to your memories for comfort and remember to lean on your friends and family for strength and know God is lovingly carrying your family through this unimaginable time. Each tear we have shed is our love rising up to Shelby in heaven. When we see the rays of sunshine shining through the clouds we will know Shelby is up in heaven smiling that contagious smile down on all of us. I, like Shelby's friend from DePauw, have a divine intervention story about Shelby. I was looking out my kitchen window in total disbelief with pain and sorrow in my heart thinking about Shelby. I said to God as I was looking out my kitchen window at my flowers, if I see a hummingbird today I will know Shelby is happy and safe in heaven. About 7 minutes later I saw a hummingbird, only for a second, in my garden. I knew Shelby was with God and she was happy. I haven't seen the hummingbird since but everytime I do I know it is Shelby coming to let all of us know she is fine. We will miss her so much. She was a remarkable young woman we should all strive to be like. She accomplished more in her short 21 years than most of us do in a lifetime. We love you and are here for you."

I remember her smiling face at Laurie and Mike's leading Kevin around by his nose, always off on a new adventure. She lit up a room, even as a child, and she continued to do so all through her life. "Lisa,Shelby had a gift of making other people feel special with just a smile. Her beauty, warmth and that twinkle in her eye is what made her 'the pretty girl with curly hair'. But it was not what was outside, but the immense beauty inside that could not be contained and radiated out that affected everyone she met.May we all sit outside this summer at night, find the brightest star, and think of Shelby and offer up a pray for your family so that you can understand the reason why God took her so young. No family should feel your pain, but we must believe there is a plan for all of this.May everyone's prayers help you through this horrible time in your lives. "

Rod and I are deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic and sudden loss of your beautiful Shelby. No words can ease your pain but have faith that Shelby is in a good place where her beautiful face and sunny outlook illuminate the heavens. I remember her so well from Mohawk Trails where she outshined everybody - always happy, always smiling, always animated and talking as she'd move throughout the halls and classrooms with those beautiful curls bouncing. She grew into a beautiful young woman reflecting back to all the love of the wonderful family she came from. She was a gift to all who knew her. Our prayers are for Shelby and for the three of you that God may keep all of you in his safekeeping."
