"I'm a Texan but found myself in Indianapolis from 1986-1997 and for those years in my life, Hawk was my absolute, no holds barred best buddy for life. Ironically, I met Hawk thru his wife Betty, the president of the neighborhood association that I worked closely with to come up with a commercial development at 465 and Meridian that her association could support. It was thru my trips to Betty's living room to discuss building heights and parking garages that I came to know Hawk. What didn't we do in the ten yers I knew Hawk! We went to two World Series, to Comiskey's last weekend, countless Pacer and Colts games, NCAA Basketball Championships, the Masters, you name it, we did it. He taught me how to get from my house in Meridian Kessler to the Indy 500 track on Race Day in thirty minutes!!!But the thing we loved to do was play golf. I bet we played 1,000 rounds of golf together...including eight rounds in Ireland!! I was half his size and could out-drive him but the guy could putt lights out! He would just shake his head and smile the Hawk smile when I would knock it tfifteen feet from the hole and three putt and he would hole a ten footer to beat me.We partnered up for the four-ball every year down at South Grove and nearly won the damn thing! Hawk, Bill Chaille and I use to always partner up for any scramble we could find. I loved being on the golf course with Hawk.Betty and Hawk had a big screen in the living room and a pool in the backyard. If there was a big game on the tube and we weren't there in person, I was there eating his griiled ribs and finding my usual spot on the floor in front of the tube. We watched Douglas beat Tyson, the Steelers steal the AFC Championship from Jim Harbaugh's Colts and Greg Norman blow six shot lead Sunday at the Masters.Hawk loved Betty and his boys deeply! He was so proud of Betty's accomplishments when she returned to work and all of his son's progress in work and school. He spoke with so much pride of Corey's leadership at Culver and Andy's law carreer and Eric's entreprenurial knack. He knew he was lucky to have such great in-laws , too!He was a guy's guy with an an incredibly unselfish heart (two of them!!). We laughed out loud so hard when we were together.I was blessed to know him and call him friend. I'll never forget Hawk, ever. "

He and Al had the mnost unique and wonderful friendship of any men I ever knew. I got a big kick out of both of them. Butch was one of the most amazing athletes I ever saw and he looked like a movie star, better than most. He and I spent countless times double dating, playing golf and other sports, laughing and joking with his wonderful mom Hazel at their home off of Keystone ave. We both battled the same serious heart issues and we lost touch over the recent years. That is something I will regret for the rest of my days. I wish I could have had one more chance to see him to tell him how much I loved him. He had friends from all walks of life and a heart big enough to love them all. He was always calm and could always put a situation into perspective. He had such great common sense, such a wonderful attitude about life. He never complained, never lost his sense of humor, and loved Betty and the boys and all of his extended family so much. I'm so glad they found each other, and that the boys had such a great, participating dad. With his sports prowess, and his great patience, he was a great role-model for the boys. Even though we were high school classmates, I never really got to know Hawk until a bunch of us went to the 1999 Ryder Cup in Boston. I probably hadn't seen Hawk for many years at that point, but, just in case my memory of his athletic prowess was a little hazy, he managed to record an 'ace' while playing golf in Boston. This was only a few short months before his heart transplant. He was just so cool about it.As I started making more frequent trips back to Indy, I had many more opportunities to lose to Hawk, but also to get to know him better. He was a man's man and a great guy! I last saw Hawk this summer at the Senior Open at Crooked Stick. Since I was a marshal at the tournament, it was the only time in my life I could tell Hawk to shut up and get away with it. I also had the opportunity to meet Corey for the first time. Along with Joe O'Connell, what fun the four of us had at the tournament!I'm a sentimental old fool and as I sit here in Arizona, tearing up, I realize that a veritable icon in my life is gone. We were all innocent, naughty of course, but Butch was in his way very innocent, very pure, and very bad of course at the same time. He was always young, always in the moment, and had a real good sense that maybe none of our fun would last, and he should enjoy it and soak it up when he could. He was always ready to laugh, and understood instinctively that life was a bucket of slop with a few candy bars in there somewhere and he always went after them.He was of course the best natural athlete I've ever seen, better than Joe Montana (who played three sports) as a pure athlete. I first met Butch in CYO Camp in sixth greade of so when he won about 20 different events in the track and field meet for the camp. He high jumpedlike he had done it his whole life. You are tempted to say that Butch had feline grace (Alfred, that's a cat), but really he had equine grace. He had the greatest athletic legs you could have, which helped him run throw, hit a golf ball, high jump, name it.Someone that gifted almost HAD to die young, sadly, but this also means that Bob Griffin, by the same reasoning, should live to 111. But he also had grace, period. It was natural, and it was God's light shining through him like an incandescent glow. He was graceful and in the moment, and too bad all of us weren't more like Butch"

"Ok, where was I when the Leppert website said, "Enough already, jerko! You are supposed to make COMMENTS,not a damn novel!" Look, Leppert website, I hear you, butmust overrule your objection. So I continue.Butch played on the left side, where the Spectacular guys-Westphal, Butch, Alfred played. The Reliables-Dave Dezelan, Jumbo Hiatt, and Mike Harrison played on the right. So if we really needed yards, I had to give it to Butchto run from left to right, with the Reliables blocking for Butch, rather than have reliable Harrison run and worry about the Spectaculars. So Butch always got his yards, and when we wanted a big gain we'd pitch to Butch and have Alfred lead him left and hope Alfred creamed somevictim and Butch would get a big one. We were literally about six inches from the goal line against Wood, with Butch almost over when the horm sounded. We came that close to a State championship, but we knew we were the best. The last time I saw Butch at our Reunion,Butch, Dave Dezelan, Alfred, a few others, just stoppedtalking after someone of us said how cool it was to have those moments together that season, and then, no onesaid a thing for what ws likely a minute but seemed longer, as we basked in a glow 40 years after the fact. Butch and I had great talks that reunion, and I will neverforget them.I will mercifully end this bombast by repeating that Butch had grace that God gave him, and as proof I note not only that by all accounts Betty loved him tremendously, and that he has wonderful kids, but also that he went out as a young man with Mary Beth and Susie, who, as Timmy Micheli and I have long noted, are indeed gifts from God.We are all children, but most of us try to act like adults. Butch never tried to adult you. He was young always.Butch was special to all of us who grew up with him, and I hope you all will raise some glasses to Butch-I wish I could be there-and remember him well. "

We weren't just good, we were great--and that's not "The older I get, the better I was." No, the record shows that our club won 32 straight games over two seasons, and, of course, Hawk played an important role in all that as we made contributions to the Cathedral City Championship Trophy collection. As gifted as he was on the athletic field, I never heard or saw any evidence of it going to his head; he pulled for everyone on the team, and they pulled for him. Although we were never close friends (I'm older!), conversation with him was easy and nearly always included a smile and a laugh or two.Our family moved to Chicago in 1963 after I graduated from Cathedral, and fate brought us back in '97. In '98, I played in the CHS Alumni Golf Outing with some of my classmates. Sure enough, there was Hawk, having a great time with everyone--many of them were the friends mentioned in these tributes, whom I remember well. Hawk and I exchanged hellos and a hearty handshake, and he said it was good to see me. The thing is, I could tell he meant it. It was good to see him again, too.To all Hawk's family and friends, I know you have a hole in your heart right now, but Hawk's spirit will make it seem like a hole-in-one. Saw Butch @ our local Keoger the day after he went to see the cardiologist the first attack he had, He described how the Doctor asked him his medical history including the question of "Do You smoke?' "Dear Betty and boys,I just received a call from Alfred (Buddy) telling me of Butch's passing. Please accept my deepest sympathy. Having grown up with both of them I have very fond and "funny" memories of all their antics. The best one was Butch telling the story of Mr. Cerulli catching them crawling into the house (I believe alcohol was involved) and asking if they were "goda dama insects".I think he was one of the most handsome young men in that whole group and as he got older what made him even more special was his love of family and friends. I don't think I've ever known anyone who loved his Mother, his wife and his boys more than Butch. They were his life and I know he will be deeply missed. I feel honored that I knew him.It seems that the hardest thing about getting older is losing such special people."

"I have such great memories of Hawk & Betty too. I can't look at a hot air balloon without remember our "crash." He held me in the basket of that air balloon as we thumped and bumped across corn fields trying to land over and over again. We joked about having to pick corn husks out of our teeth! Wow,...that was a wild experience. We couldn't even talk about it without busting out in laughter until we cried. He was always ready for a good time. - Last time we saw him,.. he was bubbling over about the success of all the boys and Betty too. Please know we are thinking about you all right now and in the future. Love you!"

"I worked for Furrow Buildling Materials for 9 years in Nora. I have wonderful memories of Hawk ordering his deck packages. He also built our deck displays. He was always kind and considerate to everyone. He always had a smile and would stop to say hello. After Furrow went out of business I worked at Bank One in Nora and I was very lucky wait on Hawk and Corey a few times.I just want to say Heaven is lucky to have Hawk as an ANGEL. I know he is watching over his freinds and family. I feel so lucky to have met such a wonderful man."
