Roberta Quandt, 66, of Indianapolis, died on Friday, February 12, after having been diagnosed with Mesothelioma in 2007. She had retired in 2003 after 30 years of teaching English at North Central High School, to ride horses, travel, garden, and golf with her husband, North Central High School Principal CE Quandt.
Roberta leaves behind her three favorite things ? grandson Jake Hogan (6) and granddaughters Caly (6) and Quinn (1) Plowman ? who knew her as their ?Diboo.?
Roberta Quandt held a BS and an MA from Butler University where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi fraternity for women.
Roberta is preceded in death by her father, Harry E. Bowsher. She is survived by her mother, Shirley Echols (Ray); her aunt, Catherine Purves; her sister, Andi Feezle (Bob); and her brother, Greg Bowsher (Cynthia Orr).
Roberta is also survived by her daughters, Kristin Chapman Hogan (Brian J. Hogan) of Indianapolis and Kady Chapman Plowman (Clay Plowman) of Los Angeles. Roberta?s passion for imparting knowledge and serving her community lives on in her two daughters, both of whom are teachers and Pi Phi?s.
Roberta Quandt was also grateful to share the love and lives of CE?s children and grandchildren: Amanda & Mack Overton, Abigail, Willis, and Laura Overton; Timothy Quandt of California; and Emily & Lloyd Williams, Morgan, McKenna, and baby Cadel Evan Williams.
The Memorial Service will be at Zionsville Presbyterian Church after the calling from 1-5 on Thursday, February 18. Despite her legendary gardening prowess, in lieu of flowers, Roberta would prefer that generous donations be made to the Washington Township Schools Foundation (WTSF), H. Dean Evans Community and Education Center, 8550 Woodfield Crossing Blvd., Indianapolis, IN 46240. Care and arrangements have been entrusted to the Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel 740 E. 86th Street, Indianapolis. You are invited to visit www.leppertmortuary.com where you may sign the online guestbook, leave a personal message for the family or make a memorial contribution.

We are grateful for the tough standards she held to in her classroom, demanding only the best from her freshman students, giving them the strongest possible start to high school English. When my father passed away this summer, a friend brought to my attention this poem by the 2nd century A.D. Greek poet Carphyllides. With but a couple of minor changes, it seems appropriate for Roberta, an English teacher, and for you, one who has known the beauty and value of Classics.Find no fault with my fate, traveler, in passing my tomb. Not even in death have I anything that calls for mourning. I had grandchildren, and I enjoyed the companionship of my husband. I saw my children marry, and children sprang from their unions. I lulled my grandchildren to sleep on my lap and never mourned the death of one of them or was troubled by his having an illness. My children, my husband, and my grandchildren have poured libations on my grave and sent me off on a painless journey to the home of the pious dead to sleep the sweet sleep."

When North Central became a four year high school, we transferred over along with several other teachers. Years later, Roberta heard I was writing a book about parenting. She was very supportive.
