"The hardest part about attending your service Joe, will be that I expect you to walk right through the door with a purposeful stride and a smile on your face. While teaching at Brebeuf I made a point of stopping in to see some of my favorite counselors, Joe was always there with a witty reply or story that made us all laugh. He was one of the kindest people I have ever known, and it feels as if a light has gone out in the world with his passing, I wish you heavenly peace dear friend,"

"Joe, my dear friend...we became acquainted when you were teaching a class at IUPUI that I ended up taking twice (voluntarily!) and you found out I had a problem with my knee that resulted in a surgery you assisted Dr. Kunkel with (I know you two have stories on that one for which you always reminded me of!). We became instant friends and have remained so for the last 21 years. We always tried to have lunch on your school breaks at least twice a year - regretably, our schedules became so busy in the last few years that we were unable to get together. I will miss you terribly - I will never forget the times we spent together (you know so much more about me than most people). I'm sure your students and colleagues will miss you too - as you will them. You meant so much to so many people and touched so many lives. Watch over all of us from Heaven (smiling I hope)..."

"I want to express my sympathies at Joe's passing. We were great friends from elememtary through High School but kind of lost touch after graduation. Joe always had a great love for sports even in elementary school and wanted to be very competitive but neither of us were endowed with great physical abilities. That never slowed him down though; he was a very tough adversary. We had many classes together all through High School but probably one of the last was Physics. We both made it through but I'm not sure how. Neither of us were very popular with the girls. I always felt bad because Joe had asked a particular girl to Prom and she agreed but later backed out. We both ended up going though and despite my backwardness I have been blessed with having found a mate to whom I have been married for 19 years and have 3 great children. I am sorry Joe never had that opportunity. It sounds like he was very fulfilled in his work and a big impact on many lives. I'm very sorry for your loss. "

Your friendship, kindness, and council during my tenure with the Brebeuf football program (not to mention our after game get-togethers) allowed me to see another side of you not found in many others. Thank you. May you rest in ever lasting peace. "
