Jesus came calling today, July 29, 2011, on Dodie Miles Kappes and accompanied her home, after saying good bye on the shoulder of her husband of 62 years, Philip ?Skip? Kappes. Dodie grew up in Kokomo, Indiana and attended Butler University in the 1940?s. While there she met Skip and was married four years later. A consummate homemaker, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Dodie and Skip had three children, Susan Kappes Townes, P. Miles Kappes and Mark W. Kappes. She also leaves her sister, Ruth Miles Golightly, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. In addition to managing her family she was an outstanding contributor to her church, Butler University, Kappa Alpha Theta, the Children?s Museum and Indianapolis Zoo. Family came first with Dodie who guided her children with a firm, but loving example of how to conduct a life. Grandma?s ?suggestions? were a sure guide to her grandchildren. An active volunteer in her community, Dodie served on many boards as both a member and president. She was president of the Gamma Alumnae of kappa Alpha Theta, Indianapolis Alumnae of Kappa Alpha Theta, Benefe Guild, Indiana Lawyers Auxiliary, the Children?s Museum Guild and the Indianapolis Zoological Guild. Under her leadership the Museum initiated the outstanding Haunted House providing on going support for Museum operations. Dodie received many honors and awards from her volunteers over the years. The Children?s Museum Guild awarded her The Spooner Award which awards the member who has devoted the most hours and service to the Museum. She also received The Brass Rind Award for her outstanding involvement in the life of the Museum. The National Organization of Kappa Alpha Theta awarded her The Twin Star Award for her outstanding service to the Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter as well as to the Indianapolis community. Dodie was an active alumna for Butler University, supporting both the men?s and woman?s basketball teams over the years. In 1999 she received the Butler Medal, distinguishing the recipient for their services to the university as well as their community. Dodie was selfless in her activities centered on children and education. You are invited to visit the website www.leppertmortuary.com where you may share a personal memory of Dodie, sign the guest book or in lieu of flowers make a memorial contribution to Butler University Kappes Fellowship or First Meridian Heights Presbyterian Church. Dodie will be sorely missed, but never forgotten. We will love and miss you always. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel.

"Dear Skip, I was saddened to read that you had lost Dodie. I keep in touch with Ken and Nitzie so I also sent my condolences to Ken. We lived next door to Ken and Nitzie when I was growing up on 84th St. You also drew up my Aunt Catherine Wilson's (lived in the same house on 84th St.) power of attorney paper in 1997 for me. "

"Dear Skip and family,The beautiful service today honoring our beloved neighbor and friend, Dodie, spoke deeply to our hearts. How beautifully each one of the children spoke of her. I am forever grateful to Dodie and still am in awe of her loving concern when she learned that I had broken my ankle. Skip you came over with the most beautiful giant chocolate chip cookie I have ever seen, artistically and colorfully decorated. Her acts of kindness will always be remembered. Miles' reassuring words, knowing that their mother is safely in the arms of Jesus, were so comforting. We will miss our very special neighbor. With sympathy to all, and prayers,Elisabeth & Charlie"

"Dear Susie, Skip, Mark & Miles, So many times visiting mom in Indpls., I have asked her, how are the Kappeses? I think about Dodie's good nature when we were kids and Susie and I would be playing upstairs. Her attitude was always upbeat and caring, yet she was matter of fact. Of all the "parents" when we were kids, I was always glad to hear that Skip and Dodie were still around and together. The Kappes family was an integral part of my childhood....albeit so long ago!You all are in my thoughts as it is so sad to lose someone so very dear. My sincerest condolances,Carolyn Lloyd-Turbett ( Keeno)...Bev & Fred Lloyd's daughter"
