Alice Anne TeKolste
December 8, 1924 - April 25, 2013

Alice Parsons TeKolste, 88, of Indianapolis passed away on April 25, 2013. Alice was born December 8, l924 in Celina, Ohio. Her parents were Thomas Corwin Parsons and Grace Shilling Parsons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elton "Tek" TeKolste in 1983.

Alice and Tek met at Indiana University during WWII where she was a student and he was in the Army Specialized Training Corps. He later served in Europe. They were married following the end of the war and first lived in Lincoln, Nebraska. Educational and job opportunities took them to Ann Arbor, Michigan; Rochester, New York; Chicago, Illinois; and finally to Indianapolis where he served as President of the Indiana Hospital Association for 23 years until his death in 1983.

Alice was a remarkable woman and a remarkable mother whose lifelong commitment to education and learning was passed on to her children and grandchildren. She took immense joy in her family, expressed great pride in their accomplishments, and fostered frequent reunions that forged tight bonds amongst all. Her love and support were constantly felt across the generations.

Alice was a graduate of Indiana University and a member of First Congregational Church for over 45 years. She served on the boards of the Visiting Nurse Home Care Service (now The Visiting Nurse Service), the YWCA, and the League of Women Voters. Alice also served on the Habitat for Humanity Family Selection Committee and was a long-time volunteer for the Alliance of the Indianapolis Museum of Art serving in the Better than New Shop, Garden Shop and the former Rental Gallery. She was a Past Co-President of the American Association of University Women and a member of the former People of Vision, serving the visually impaired and now called PBI Saving Sight in Indiana.

Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Katherine TeKolste and her husband, Dr. David Tempest of Seattle, Washington: two sons, E. Kurt TeKolste. PhD. and wife Barbara (Schaffer) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; H. Kim TeKolste. JD and wife, Jeanne (McCalley) of Carmel, Indiana. Alice is also survived by eight grandchildren: two grandsons; Peter and Kevin Tempest (Laurie) and six granddaughters: Lynne Tempest, Allison Tarnoff (Michael), Dr. Keala TeKolste, Emily, Rebecca and Sarah TeKolste and one great-grandchild: Andrew Tarnoff and a half-brother, Henry White of Salinas, California.

Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel, is assisting the family. Services will be private.
