In loving memory of

Mr. Borgert
February 1, 1942 - October 25, 2013

John Edward Borgert, son of Theresa (Gregory) Borgert, passed away while surrounded by his wife and children, Friday, October 25, 2013.
John was born February 1, 1942 in Dayton, Ohio. His mother Theresa raised him to defy polio and out-think his physical limitations. From early on he was as courageous as he was funny, as wise as he was playful. He enjoyed the full benefits of a large family of aunts and uncles, including the gift of storytelling, which he never relinquished.
John graduated from Chaminade High School and then the University of Dayton. On May 3, 1969, he married Mary Evelyn McEldowney of Versailles, Ohio, to whom he remained devoted for more than 44 years.
He started his professional career at Wright Patterson Air Force base in Dayton, but found that the personal touch that he carried would be better utilized in another industry. In 1968, he made the jump to mortgage banking, which set the stage for his family's move to Indianapolis in 1979. He remained in this career, as an industry award winner, until he retired over 40 years later.
Known for his humor and big heart, many who just met him felt like they had always known him. Having seen immense generosity in his childhood home, and in the hearts of his aunts and uncles, John always took pride helping others in need, even when he was in need himself. In addition to being a devoted husband, father and friend, he spent the majority of his free time coaching football, basketball, baseball, track and soccer. If not attending to family and coaching, John spent his additional time as a leader in many organizations, including as St. Pius X Athletic Director, Commissioner of Nora Little League, Cub Scout Master, Optimist Club and Knights of Columbus member, and owner of Universal Mortgage.
John is survived by his wife Mary Evelyn, five sons John David (Kim), Craig Edward (Kelly), Jeffrey Joseph (Amanda), Eric Joseph (Kristin), Mark Edward (Colleen) and Beth Ann (Matthew) Tyner; 12 grandchildren; his brother Charles (Sue) Borgert, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Theresa, sister Judy, and brother Michael.

"I was a classmate with John & the 1960 class of Chaminade High School and also at the Univrsity of Dayton. He was an example of why they quit using the word "handicap", because he sure could hold his own on a basketball court. I will remember him as a friend and a very good person."
