"I had the privilege of serving on the catering team for Dr. West's celebration of life yesterday evening, and to the family I just want to say - it was an absolute honor. The event was absolutely beautiful and you could feel the love pouring out of everyone who walked into that room. I was not among those privileged enough to know Dr. West, but after that reception I felt like I did. What I know for a fact is that she loved well and was well loved, she always strove to do better and be better, and she had an incredible compassion for people. Without ever having met her, I now look up to her as an example of the type of woman I want to be. Carrie Ann (Glasscock) West, 42, died on June 7 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was a committed and compassionate physician, a wonderful friend and devoted to her family.
Carrie was born on April 10, 1974 near Cleveland, Ohio to Larry and Lee Glasscock. She graduated magna cum laude from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio in 1996 and was an active member of the Alpha Phi sorority.
She earned a master's degree in biology from Purdue University before going on to the Indiana University School of Medicine. Despite being diagnosed with breast cancer in her third year of medical school, she graduated with honors in 2006 and was selected for membership in Alpha Omega Alpha, a prestigious medical honor society. Her calling was caring for people and she was grateful for the years when her health allowed her to practice medicine.
Carrie was passionate about advancing cancer research supporting the organization 100 Voices Of Hope and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. When she took on a task, she committed herself to it fully. Her Race for the Cure team was a top fundraiser for the years she participated. She was also an ardent supporter of palliative care and was committed to advancing awareness of the need for providing comfort and care to those who decide not pursue treatment toward the end of life.
Carrie's love for her family and her determination to show that love daily was one of the many gifts to those she is leaving behind. She is survived by her devoted husband, Brian West; her beloved parents Larry and Lee Glasscock of Indianapolis; her grandparents Oscar and Betty Glasscock of Newbury, Ohio; her brother Mike (Julie) Glasscock and her nieces and nephew, Hanna, Evan and Lainey of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and other family members; Barbara Lewis West of Indianapolis, Indiana; Gary and Sandy Glasscock of Chardon, Ohio; Jeff Glasscock and Don Glasscock of Newbury, Ohio, Kyle and Dave Meyer of Cleveland, Ohio and Dianne West of South Bend, Indiana.
She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Kenneth and Pauline Roden; Dave Glasscock, John Glasscock, Judy (Glasscock) Kaye, Jackie Glasscock and Edward West.
The family would like to acknowledge the excellent care by Dr. Colleen Brown, Dr. Greg Gramelspacher and Dr. Anna Maria Storniolo.
Carrie loved watching silly movies and exciting football games. She loved beaches and dancing. She spoke from her heart and when she offered advice she provided the help to back it up. She worried about her patients and was always available to them. Carrie cherished her friendships and the times when she could be at home with her husband and her dog, Lucy, the mini dachshund that came into Carrie's life at the same time her cancer did and never left her side. Carrie's compassion, her sense of humor and beauty of spirit were her most remarkable traits and she joyously shared those with others.
A reception celebrating her life will be held at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, 4000 Michigan Road on June 16 from 4:30-7:30pm. There will be a church service at the Newbury United Community Church on 14916 Auburn Road in Newbury, Ohio on Saturday, June 18. Visitation starts at 11am with the memorial service beginning at noon. Lunch at the church will follow.
