Mary Frances (Miller) Cannon, 86, Hollywood, Florida (formerly of Chicago, Illinois) transitioned peacefully at 3:52 a.m., on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was recently placed under the 24 hour care of Vitas Hospice succumbing to complications with Chronic Obstruction Pulmonary Disease.
She confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized at New Salem Missionary Baptist Church, Chicago, Illinois. Around 1993, she responded to the gospel preached by Bishop Horace E. Smith, of the Apostolic Faith Church, and was baptized in Jesus' name. She loved to sing the old hymns like "Precious Lord" and "Open Our Eyes", and she loved the Word of God. She also loved her pastor, Dr. Horace Smith, and was strengthened by his teaching and preaching during Sunday services. . Even while in Florida, Mary was thrilled when Michael sent CD's and DVD's from "38th Street". She would prop up her Bible and searched the scriptures daily." Her faith grew over the years and it sustained her through many painful trials and disappointments. Her faith in Jesus finally took her Home to be with the one she loved most of all."
Mary Frances (Miller) Cannon was born on October 24, 1930, in Cotton Plant, Arkansas, daughter of Ezekiel Miller and Susie (Bowen) Miller. She was the youngest of five children. She was affectionately known as "Mae Frances", had a feisty way, and noticeable fashion style. Mary Frances (Miller) Cannon moved to Chicago, Illinois and in due course married John W. Cannon. They moved to Detroit, Michigan, and to that union they had three children. They divorced and she moved back to Chicago raising her children and working her career. She originally moved to sunny South Florida in October 2000.
Mary Frances (Miller) Cannon in Chicago, Illinois, attended Copernicus Elementary School, Lindblom High School and earned an Associate's level certification of HTASCP. board certified from the American Society for Clinical Pathology. She was a retired histological technician. She was an employee with hospital medical labs for facilities such as the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Passavant Memorial, Michael Reese, and the Hines Veterans Administration.
She is preceded in death by her ex-husband, John W. Cannon, Detroit, Michigan, her brother, Ezell Miller(Pearl), sister, Lillie (Miller) Mayfield (Fletcher), Rosa Lee Miller, and niece Annette Miller. She has one living sister who is age 102, Nettie Williams (Reesie), from the Chicagoland area.
She is survived by her beloved children, Michael Obaiya Cannon, of South Holland, Illinois, Terry Ivan Cannon, of Chicago, Illinois, Sharon Joy (Cannon) Terrell of Miramar, Florida, grandchildren, Kamau (Kay) Cannon, Terry John Cannon, Dawn Marie Cannon, Malinda Carol Cannon, Michele Robin Terrell, Shannon LaShae Urquhart, four great grandchildren Daphina Jaden Cannon, Jaden Green, De'Jona Cannon and Mikayla Crawford, beloved nieces/nephews namely, Ruby Austin (Ledell), and cousin(s) Ruby Jean Jackson and other friends, other relatives, plus the residents/staff/aides of Hillcrest Nursing Home. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 11, 2016, in a Memorial at Apostolic Faith Church, 3823 South Indiana Avenue, Chicago, Illinois from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon.
