Joyce M. Whitney, 66, passed away at 11:30 pm Wed, May 24, 2007 at Englewood Hospital in Florida, where she was residing. She died of surgical complications from her struggle with cancer. Joyce was born in Markes, PA on October 24, 1940, the daughter of Dorothy L. Mellott of Mercersburg, and the late Paul D. Mellott.
She was a 1958 graduate of James Buchanan High School and continued her education at West Chester State College, earning her Masters Degree at Southern State Conneticut College. Joyce resided in Levittown, Long Island, NY, and taught Physical Education for 33 years with Roslyn Public Schools. She relocated to the west coast of Florida after her retirement.
Joyce was a member of the Hicksville Methodist Church on Long Island and enjoyed singing in the choir. She was a good pianist and loved to sing and entertain. She was equally passionate about her garden and bowling with her church league. She traveled worldwide with friends and family, and especially loved visiting the big Island of Hawaii. One of her favorite pastimes was soaking up the sun at any beach, anywhere.
Joyce is survived by her mother, Dorothy Mellott and her daughter, Jeanette Whitney, of Mercersburg; a brother, Gerald D. Mellott, of Chambersburg; and sisters, Janice Gray of York, Julie Neil of Englewood, FL, and Tamara J. Cupic of NY, NY.
A memorial service will be held at 11am Saturday, June 2, at Fair Ridge Assembly of God, Shade Gap. Contributions may be sent to TRIO, Transplant Recipients International Organization, Inc., 2100 M.
