Frank J. Schmidt, Jr., 85, of Punta Gorda died October 22, 2016 at the Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans’ Home in Port Charlotte, FL. He was born March 21, 1931 in Passaic, New Jersey, the son of Frank and Mary Schmidt, Sr. He attended PS1 School in New York City and Middleburgh Central School in Middleburgh, New York, graduating in 1949.
Frank enlisted in the US Navy in 1949 and was stationed aboard the USS Theodore E. Chandler DD-717 in San Diego. California and was deployed to the Far East when the North Korean’s People’s Army invaded South Korea. The destroyer joined Helena in a highly successful shoot near Sinehang, during which the two ships destroyed a North Korean supply train and damaged several bridges and tunnels. After a total of three tours, Frank returned to the States and was stationed in Key West, Florida and was discharged in 1953.
Frank was married to Nancy Coschina on September 3, 1955 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Schoharie, NY. He and Nancy co-owned Schmidt’s TV Sales and Service in Middleburgh, NY. They also owned the Schoharie County Electronic Cable Company, Inc. He was a member of the Middleburgh Rotary Club, the Cobleskill County Club, and a lifetime member of the BPOE 2153 Elks Club and past Commander of the Timothy Murphy American Legion Post #248. He and his family also enjoyed their summers on Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, NY.
Frank and his family relocated to Punta Gorda in 1977 where he enjoyed boating, bowling, fishing, traveling and spending time with his family. He was employed in Sales and Real Estate Development until his retirement in 1995.
Frank is survived by his son, Frank (Debi) Schmidt III of Saranac Lake, NY, daughters, Sandra (James) Bause of Marietta, GA, Lauren Schmidt of Punta Gorda, Amy (Roger) Birchfield of Harbor Heights; grandchildren, Jeremy (Alexa) Birchfield, Mary (Brandan) Bird, Melissa (Michael) Leitner, Patrick (Trisha) Bause, Kimberly (Tim) Scollo, Kyle Spoor, Nicholas Schmidt, and Sydney Schmidt; great-grandchildren, Makayla and Hayden Bird, Riley and Tanner Birchfield, Addison and Charlotte Leitner; brother John Schmidt of Pueblo, CO, Mary Brampton of Rancho Cucamonga, CA and several nieces and nephews.
Frank was predeceased by his wife Nancy and his sister Rose Frye.
A funeral service with full military honors will be held at the National Cemetery in Sarasota, FL on Monday, November 7, 2016 at 11:30 AM.

I was really into the Beach Boys and Mr. Schmidt would always order me the newest Beach Boy album for me. I still have those albums (in mono) and still play them from time to time.
