Bernard Jerome Singer
August 5, 1922 - June 18, 2011

Bernard Jerome Singer, 88, of Punta Gorda, FL passed away Saturday, June 18, 2011. He was born August 5, 1922 in Braddock, PA to Harry Singer and Josephine Ambrose Burdelsky. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Bernie was an educator in Pennsylvania and was a member of the Pennsylvania Assoc. of School Retirees, The Charlotte County Retired Educators, the DAV Col S.D. Foster Chapter #76, The PUFL American Legion Post 0944,Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 764, the International Technology Education Assoc. and many others. He was active in the Roman Catholic Church all his life. He served many volunteer ministries including that of a Eucharistic minister. His social life revolved around the Knights of Columbus. He was a past grand Knight of Council 3084 in Pennsylvania. As a life long member of Peters Township, PA he received many awards for his service to the community. He served on the Washington County Authority to help build the new jail.
He is survived by his wife Dolores Garvis, seven step children, Gerard Garvis, Vincent Garvis, Lena Miller, Michael Garvis, Peter Garvis, Dennis Garvis, and Patrice Wolfe. His fourteen step grandchildren, particularly Maggie and Marigrace will miss him. His God daughter, Kate Crider, as well as his cousins, Charlene Mathews of Port Charlotte, Regina Warnet and Betty Jean Mutchler will also miss him. His close "buddies" Vinnie Crider, Dan McPhoyle, and Joe Stanko are saddened by his passing.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 56 years, Marguerite Singer.
Visitation will be Wednesday, June 22, 2011 from 2 p.m. to 4p.m. at the Kays-Ponger and Uselton Funeral Home, 635 E. Marion Ave. Punta Gorda, FL 33950. The Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 am, Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Punta Gorda. Services will be held in McMurray, PA next week with burial at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
