John S. "Jack" Woods III
May 4, 1938 - March 4, 2017

John S. Woods III, "Jack," age 78, passed from this life to eternal life march 4, 2017, after a long hospitalization.

John was born in Cincinnati, but also spent part of his childhood in southern Indiana. He graduated from Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati, Purdue University, and earned a Master's Degree at the University of Cincinnati. He worked at DuPont, then the Agricultural Division of Dow Chemical in Midland, Michigan as a senior research chemist. When Dow moved their laboratories to Indiana and became Dow Elanco, he moved to Carmel, Indiana, remaining her after retirement.

He had a heart for service to the community. He belonged to Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity, during his college years. He was registered in the Boy Scouts of America for over 70 years, first as a boy, then as an adult leader, active in district and council leadership in Michigan, earning his Woodbadge beads and the Silver Beaver Award. In Indiana he stayed active in Scouting with troop leadership, staffing BSA summer camp programs and in later years on the Camp Inspection teams. He belonged to Toastmasters and ASTM in Michigan. In Carmel, he was active in Kiwanis International and worked with the Key Clubs in the Carmel area schools. He began substitute teaching at Westfield High School in chemistry classes, and eventually subbed in all the sciences, math, and history classes. He drew the line at phys ed, art, and French. He was one of the most frequently requested substitute teachers right up until his hospitalization. He was also active in Carmel's Citizens Emergency Response Team. John was a kind and friendly man, always willing to be of service and always ready with a joke or two. He was preceded in death by his parents, John S. Woods II and Dorothy(Lewis) Woods, and his first wife, Ruth(Lingo) Woods. John is survived by his wife of nearly 25 years, Christine(Griffin) Woods and her four children: Gerald Egleson, Steve Egleson, Daniel Egleson, and Elizabeth Egleson and their families. John was a loving and supportive part of their lives. John is survived by his son, John S. Woods IV, and his daughter, Catherine(Woods) Wertz and their families. John counted himself as having six children, ten grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was much loved and will be greatly missed.

"I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Woods subbed for me years ago when i was hit by a car and out of my biology classes for almost a month. As a principal, he was our "number 1" sub and so enjoyed his kind and gentle nature. He will certainly be missed at WHS. Stacy McGuire, Principal of Westfield High School"

"I was Johns Barber since 2007 in Home Place and then and Butlers Barber Shop in Carmel. Always enjoyed talking with him. I have terminal cancer and will not be able to attend Memorial. God Bless, Bill Dennis"
