LeRoy "Chad" Chadwick passed away March 22nd at age 91. He was raised in St. Paul, MN and a 45 year resident of rural Peterson, developing many close friendships. Chad spent his youth deeply involved in the Boy Scouts, later becoming a scout master. A WWII Combat Veteran with the U.S. Naval-Marine Assault Forces fighting in South Pacific, and rescuing many POW's out of China. After the war he earned a degree in Mortuary Science at the U of MN and was a Funeral Director in St. Paul for many years. He was an active outdoorsman, hunter, fisherman, downhill and XC skier, making regular canoe trips into the BWCA since the late 1940's. Chad was also an active birder and beekeeper from which he received a lot of enjoyment. He loved the woods and the home that he and his wife Helen built; and for many years operated an organic strawberry and honey business. Chad was the lay-reader at Emmanuel Church in Rushford as a traditional Episcopalian for many years, a member of the Masonic Lodge of Rushford, and a life member of the Beaver Valley Boy Scout Camp.
He was preceded in death by his father LeRoy, mother Hazel, brother Rex and three sisters. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Helen, a son Philip (fiancé Ingrid), brother-in-law Karl Friedline, several nieces and nephews and many life-long friends. Chad will be remembered for his tremendous sense of humor, his honor, integrity, deep values and devotion to his faith, family and country.

"Through canoe trips in the Boundary Waters and at the Yellow River cabin some 50 years ago, Chad instilled in our scout patrol a sense of adventure and curiosity. Now, every time I leave the vehicle behind to take the first step off a trailhead or the first paddle stroke on a canoe trip, it is a result of a desire to find out what's down the trail or river that Chad helped build in his scouts. Chad, you'll forever remain in my memory for the appreciation of the outdoors, for the humor and ditties you wove into our trips, and for the confidence you gave me when I was young to continue to find new adventures. I cannot thank you enough. Helen and Phil, you too are a significant part of those memories and my thoughts are with you both. "

"Chad was a great guy. He got the job for me at Fulda which eventually led to me buying the funeral homes in Slayton. Chad has a million funny stories and could tell them like nobody else. Another time he took me and 3 other funeral directors to a casket company near Chicsgo. Lowell Hoff went on that trip-we had a ball!! My deepest sympathies to Helen and the rest of Chad's family. "Thank you Chad for sharing your experiences in the BWCA and Quetico Park with my brother Jim and I over 45 years ago. The experience you and my dad, Frank Ramisch, shared with us left a lasting impression on me to this day. Since that trip back in August of 1970 seldom a year goes by I don't return to explore that treasured area. Every time I'm in Northern Lights Country with my two boys Chad and Chris, I can't help but think of you and dad. "I was a next door neighbor of his mother, Hazel. I and my siblings were very close to Grandma Chadwick. We would go there for cookies. Chad and family would visit his mom. Being a funeral director. On one occasion I ask Chad if he ever sold "used" coffins? Another memory I have is when Chad and Helen visited our house dressed as Mr and Mrs Santa Claus.
