Obituary Thomas E. Spiers

Thomas Edward Spiers 78, formally from Vermilion, Ohio, died after a short illness on April 25, 2017. He was born to Ruby and Walter Spiers in Columbus, Ohio, March 25, 1939. He went to Ohio State University for two years before being drafted into the US Navy. Upon returning, he went to Fenn College (Cleveland State) night school for a degree in Industrial Engineering.
He was married to Shirley Ann VanArsdalen of Baltimore, Ohio in 1966. They celebrated their 50th anniversary last year.
Tom held many positions in the Vermilion Congregational Church, while his wife was the organist, living in Vermilion, Ohio. Upon moving to Florida, he continued with his church work at Gulf Cove United Methodist Church. Most recently he and his wife joined the Englewood United Methodist Church in Englewood, Florida.
Tom worked as an Industrial Engineer for Ford Motor Co for 38 years before retiring in 1997. After retiring, Tom incorporated as an Engineering Consultant and was hired by Ford to help set up two different Assembly Plants in Michigan, (Dearborn Assy. and Wayne Assy., now called Michigan Assembly Plant) working another ten years off and on setting up work allocations and cost controls.
Surviving him are: Wife Shirley, Son Bradford, daughter-in-law JoAnn Chang, of Bedminster, New Jersey, Daughter Karen Brenner, son-in-law Dr. Adam Brenner, of Severna Park, Maryland. Grandchildren: Alice Spiers, Pierce Brenner and Maya Brenner. Brother: David L. Spiers, sister-in-law Elaine Spiers of Odenton, Maryland.
Memorial service will be at the Englewood United Methodist Church, 700 East Dearborn Street, Englewood, Florida 34223, on Wednesday May 17th at 11:00 a.m.
Burial will be at the Sarasota National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family recommends a donation to the "Music Fund" of the Englewood United Methodist Church.
