Jane Thompson Black
July 23, 1924 - April 28, 2017

Mrs. Jane Thompson Black, 92, of Seymour, passed away Friday, April 28, 2017, at Covered Bridge Health Campus in Seymour. Mrs. Black was born in Frankfort, IN on July 23, 1924 to Helen Louise (Temple) and James Ralph Thompson. She attended Emerson Elementary School and graduated from Seymour Shields High School in 1942. She went on to attend Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and graduated in 1944, then attended Tobé-Coburn School for fashion in New York City and graduated in 1945. She worked at L.S. Ayres downtown Indianapolis from 1945 to 1971 where she was a buyer for the accessory departments of all branches.

Jane married Dr. Joseph Morton Black on February 7, 1971 in Seymour. He preceded her in death on December 20, 1999.

Jane was very active in many organizations in Seymour including Psi Iota Xi sorority, Boys' Club Women's Council, a Deacon and Elder, and served on the church Session at First Presbyterian Church in Seymour, member of Southern Indiana Center for the Arts, the Women's committee of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Columbia Club of Indianapolis, the All Thumbs Garden Club, the Daughters of the American Colonists and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Jane loved all animals and rescued many of them and gave them a forever home. She loved her schnauzers, Wicker and Heather.

She is survived by her nephews, James Thomas (Sylvia) Thompson, and Robert (Teresa) Thompson, a niece, Ann (Rick) Taylor, two great nephews, James Harrison Thompson, and Drew Taylor, four great nieces, Katie Taylor, Nikki (Jason) Helmuth, Natalie and Christine Sichmann, Great Grandniece and Grandnephew Remy and Kimber Helmuth, and a life-long friend and co-worker, Rosie Walker.

There will be a private family graveside service at Riverview Cemetery and a memorial service will be conducted by Voss and Sons Funeral Service, for all friends and family at First Presbyterian Church on Thursday, May 4, at 11:00 am.

Memorial checks may be written to the James Ralph Thompson Scholarship Fund or the James Temple Thompson Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Jackson County Community Foundation, or to the Seymour First Presbyterian Church through the Voss and Sons Funeral Service.
