Una Medley Lewis
Una Lewis, 94, died May 10, 2017, in Punta Gorda, Florida after a short illness. Una was born February 19, 1923, in Coolidge, Georgia, to Clark and Lathie Fallin Medley. She is survived by her children Kaye Flenner of Omega, Ga., Billie Lewis of Arcadia, Florida, Frank and Connie Lewis and Vernon Lewis Jr. of Punta Gorda, Florida.
She was the founder of Lewis' Nursery which over the years grew into a family business that served Southwest Florida. She was known to her family, neighbors and close friends as Granny. She enjoyed gardening and sneaking a cigarette whenever she could, however, she NEVER smoked a day in her life! She loved to piddle around in her yard and always had beautiful flowers and landscaping. She had a garden every spring and raised many types of vegetables. There were ALWAYS peas and butterbeans to be shelled, green beans to be snapped, corn to be shucked and okra to be cut. She shared the bounty with her neighbors, friends and family. Daily she provided home cooked meals for the family and anyone else who showed up. Granny's house was the place for family celebrations and any special occasion. Fried chicken, lacy corn bread, turnips, mustard, and fried okra, were some of the things you could expect at Granny's table. She enjoyed baking and was a master at pecan pies, sour cream pound cakes, rum cakes, coconut cream pies, coconut cakes, and lemon meringue pies. Her grandchildren all had their favorites which she willingly provided when asked. She raised 5 children and 12 grandchildren with the phrase 'spare the rod, spoil the child' in mind, which was not a problem for any us, since she whooped our behinds as needed and would make you go pick your own switch. On the other hand, her great and great, great grandchildren were spoiled rotten, and could never do wrong. Granny had 32 great grandchildren and 20 great-great grandchildren. We have several 5 generation pictures with various family members and Granny. She loved to visit and spent hours talking to us all, it was sometimes difficult to get away. If you wanted the family to know something you told tele-a-granny she made sure everyone knew and since she was a little hard of hearing she didn't always get the story right. She wasn't perfect but she was our perfect Granny, flaws and all. She loved us and she was loved by many.
She was preceded in death by her husband Vernon Layfette Lewis, one son and daughter-in-law, Charlie and Margie Munro Lewis and one great-great granddaughter Dakota Reeann Willis. She had four sisters, Marie Medley Anderson, Nadine Medley McNeil, Janie Medley Wilson and Johnny Medley Hagan, three brothers Elzie Medley, James Medley and Clark Jr. (Buddy) Medley and she outlived them all.
Arrangement are with Kays-Ponger Uselton Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at 10:30 to 11:30 on Monday, May 15th, funeral services at 11:30 with burial immediately following at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens, in Punta Gorda, FL.
