Gary Delbert Kolkman, 82, of Danville, died Monday, May 29, 2017 at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington. He was born October 22, 1934 in Burlington to Delbert L. and Olive Louise Walker Kolkman. On July 8, 1962, he married Janet Elaine Oberman at Harmony Bible Church in Danville.
He was a 1953 graduate of Yarmouth High School. He began his career at Sylvania and when it closed he went to General Electric until retirement. Gary was a member of Yarmouth Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. From 1956 to 1957 he served in the United States Army, stationed in Ft. Lee, Virginia where he was a part of the Redstone Rocket Program. He was a member of the Arbor Day Foundation.
He loved and was quite a collector of everything to do with International Harvester. He enjoyed reading American History and was considered an amateur historian. Army reunions; Old Threshers; family vacations in Colorado to camp in the mountains; visiting museums with his wife; spending time at the family farm in Yarmouth; using a metal detector to find treasures with his sons and grandsons; and when he was younger, painting, were all things that he enjoyed.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons; Edward Kolkman of Lowell, Iowa and John Kolkman (Gwendolyn) of Slocomb, Alabama; two brothers, Darrel (Sandy) Kolkman of New London and Dean (Yong) Kolkman of Simonton, Texas; three grandsons; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant sister, Valeen Louise Kolkman.
The funeral service for Mr. Gary Kolkman will be Friday, June 2 at 11:00 AM at Elliott Chapel, New London with Pastor Jeff Duffy officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:00 with the family present to greet friends beginning at 10:00 until the time of the service. Burial will follow the service at Trinity Cemetery, Mt. Union.
