ANNA MAE SHIELD
WEST LIBERTY, Iowa - Anna Mae Shield, 96, of West Liberty, passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2017, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Casket bearers will be her grandchildren. Burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. on Monday, June 5, 2017, at the funeral home. Anna Mae was born on May 15, 1921, in Muscatine, the daughter of Ernie and Minnie Albrecht Herlein. She married G. Richard Shield on November 25, 1942, in Muscatine.

Above all else she loved and treasured her family and enjoyed all the time spent together. She had been active member of Spangler Chapel United Methodist Church and the Spangler UMW. She had a huge garden and canned many items from it to feed her family. She worked side by side with her husband on the farm.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Richard Shield of West Liberty; three sons, Steven D. Shield and wife, Cyndi, of West Liberty, David W Shield and wife, Lisa, of West Liberty, and Daniel E. Shield of Atalissa; eight grandchildren, Travis Shield, Jesse Shield, Caleb Shield, Chad Shield, Stephanie Wainwright, Merrick Shield, Connie Seemuth, and Damian Bardell; 13 great-grandchildren; two step-greatgrandchildren; three sisters, Helen Mills of Cedartown, Georgia, and Florence Swanson and husband, Kenneth, and Edna Rexroth, all of Muscatine; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, James R. and Robert A. Shield; two brothers, Leo and Ralph L. Herlein; and four sisters, Lillian Herlein in infancy, Gertrude Digney, Dorothy Morse and Ruth Fuller.
