Cleo Jewel Carter
June 11, 1958 - June 26, 2017

Cleo Jewel Carter III, 59, of Mt. Pleasant and formerly of New London, died Monday, June 26, 2017 at his home.

Mr. Carter was born June 11, 1958 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, the son of Cleo J. and Betty Ann Fournerat Carter, Jr. He was a 1976 graduate of New London High School. On June 29, 2013 he married Melissa J. Simmons at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant where he remained a member.

He was a meat cutter, working at Whitaker's Market in New London, later Walgren's, Dick's Super Valu, later Dave's Super Valu, and Beaver's Market in Mt. Pleasant. He enjoyed camping, cooking and grilling, fishing, hunting, playing cards, gardening, TV trivia including Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, and spending time with his family. He loved a good challenge and the WWE. Many years ago he was a First Responder for the Henry County Rescue Squad. He enjoyed preparing deer meat for family and friends and was also a fan of the Cubs, Cardinals and the Hawkeyes.

Mr. Carter is survived by his wife of Mt. Pleasant; his mother of New London; one son, Nick (Andrya) Carter of Carlisle; two daughters, Stephanie (Chester) Heath of Mt. Pleasant, and Brandi Simmons of Lockridge; one grandson, Alexander Heath; one sister, Deb Howard of Mt. Pleasant; three brothers, Ray (Brandi) Carter of Omaha, NE , Mike (Connie) Carter of West Burlington , and Dr. Ben (Sara) Carter of New London; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, brother-in-law, David Howard, and his grandparents.

The funeral service for Mr. Carter will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, July 1, 2017 at the First Baptist Church, Mt. Pleasant. Pastor James Wortherspoon will officiate. According to his wishes, his body will be cremated following the service with inurnment at a later date. Visitation will begin after noon on Friday, June 30 at Elliott Chapel, New London with the family greeting friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. A memorial to help with expenses has been established in lieu of flowers.
