Fernando Raul Caceres
May 30, 1937 - July 15, 2017

Fernando Caceres, 80, passed away peacefully on July 15th 2017 at Northwest Hospital in Seattle, Washington.
Fernando was born on May 30, 1937 in San Salvador, El Salvador, Central America to Raul Caceres and Carmen Altamirano de Caceres. He attended Colegio Don Bosco in San Salvador. Fernando became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in El Salvador in 1953.
He immigrated to the US in 1957, joined the US Army and served tours of duty in Vicenza, Italy and Ft. Richardson, Alaska. During the Vietnam War, he served in the National Guard in Alaska. He became a US citizen in 1966.
Fernando enjoyed learning languages and quickly became fluent in Italian while stationed in Italy, serving as an interpreter for the U.S. Army when needed. He served a mission for the LDS church in New England. An avid skier (learned while in Italy), he was honored as the Outstanding National Ski Patrolman of Alaska in 1966. He was also a sky diver with the Sport Parachute Club of America in Fort Richardson, Alaska. He loved fast cars: a 1963 Corvette Stingray and a couple of 1966 Porsche 912s were among the cars he drove during his lifetime.
He worked for the oil and gas industry in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska as a heavy equipment mechanic from 1966-1986. Fernando was part of the crew that was working on the discovery well when it was announced to the world.
He married Jennifer Randall in Anchorage, Alaska in 1967. They went on to be sealed as family (a blessing in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) at the Provo Temple in Provo, Utah in 1974. They had six children (two daughters and four sons) who were the joy of Fernando's life.
The family moved to the Seattle area in 1984. Fernando went to work for King County Metro as a bus mechanic in 1986 and retired in 2010. He belonged to the Amalgamated Transit Union while he worked for King County Metro.
In his spare time, he enjoyed reading about history and politics, attending arts events, and spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. In his final years, Fernando built close friendships at the Shoreline Senior Center in Shoreline, Washington.
Besides his parents, Fernando is proceeded in death by his daughter-in-law Malinda Caceres. He is survived by his wife Jennifer Caceres; brother Jose Carlos Caceres; sisters Aida Caceres, Lilian Caceres, and Ana Gericke. He is survived by his children Raul Caceres II (m. Lael Frenzel), Alicia Caceres, Fernando Caceres, Carlos Caceres, Brent Caceres, Cynthia Caceres; and by three grandchildren Emily Deschamps (m. Christopher Deshamps), Aidan Caceres, and Elizabeth Caceres.
Fernando's life will be celebrated on Saturday, August 5th. A military honors ceremony will be held at 11:00am at Washelli Cemetery, 11111 Aurora Ave. North, Seattle Washington 98133. A memorial service will follow at 3:00pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 102 N 132nd St, Seattle, Washington 98133. A party will be held a private residence that evening to celebrate Fernando's and Jennifer's 50th wedding anniversary. They were married on August 1st 1967.
