Audrey Hathaway M.M.S.
June 9, 1931 - July 29, 2017

Audrey Hathaway, MMS, daughter of the late Emily Smith and John Hathaway, was born on June 9, 1931 in Ontario, Canada. She became at registered nurse at the Royal Victoria Hospital of Montreal, ultimately achieving her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology at McGill University in Montreal, where she also taught classes. Sr. Audrey completed Post-Doctoral Studies at the Centre d'Immunobiologie in Paris.

Joining the Medical Mission Sisters (MMS) at age 48, Sister Audrey made her First Vows in 1980 and her Final Vows in 1985. She was missioned in 1982 to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where she taught science classes for several years at the Ministry of Health's Centralized School of Nursing. She shared of her time in Ethiopia, "I enjoyed teaching there immensely. Most students worked hard and many went on to become very good doctors, nurses and scientists... I was proud of them. The years flew by, always busy ones, never boring, and I consider all of them a great gift. I feel so fortunate to have met so many people, to have been a part of their life and to have been a participant in the development that has taken place in this most beautiful country."

Sister became an Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Addis Ababa University and later, Acting Head of the Department. Moving to Wolliso, Ethiopia, in 2001, Sister Audrey taught at St. Luke's Catholic Hospital & College of Nursing, the first Catholic nursing school in the country. She was also the Office Administrator for MMS's community-based developmental program in Dire, and coordinated its turnover to the local people at the end of 2005. While living in Africa, Sister Audrey served as MMS District Coordinator for Ethiopia, and also worked on the AIDS Education Unit of the Conference of Major Religious Superiors in Addis Ababa.

Sister Audrey continued to share her gifts after moving to MMS Headquarters in the Fox Chase neighborhood of Philadelphia, working with the Community's Finance Department. Before her death, Audrey had moved to Immaculate Mary Home, where she continued to share her loving heart with those around her.

Relatives and Friends are invited to Sister's Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM on Monday, August 7 at Medical Mission Sisters Chapel, 8400 Pine Road, Philadelphia, PA.
