In loving memory of

Catherine "Kit" Hamilton McKenzie Shane
November 30, 1932 - August 4, 2017

Catherine Hamilton McKenzie Shane (Kit), 84, passed away peacefully on August 4. Kit was born on November 30, 1932 in Glasgow, Scotland to Margaret and Jack McKenzie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Shane, her parents and her brother Rex.

Kit graduated from the Royal Academy of Music and Jordanhill College of Education in Glasgow. Following a teaching career in Scotland and Canada, she came to the United States to pursue graduate studies and earned graduate degrees from DePaul University and Northwestern University. She was an editor and editorial consultant for Field Enterprises Educational Corporation and served as Senior Vice President of Encyclopedia Britannica/Compton's. She conceived of and co-authored the 16-volume Precyclopedia designed for children up to eight years of age. An avid golfer, Kit published several articles in Golf Digest and co-authored The Woman's World of Golf.

Kit loved to entertain with Harold in their Bloomington home and each year celebrated the Scottish New Year by observing Hogmanay, where Kit amused guests with the reading of Robert Burns' poem Address to a Haggis and where guests enjoyed a traditional Scottish dinner followed by singing around the piano. Kit was known to "smuggle" haggis into the country from Scotland for the December 31st festivities.

In later years music was a great companion to Kit as was the walking exercise she learned to love on the golf course. At The Forum, Kit was known for the beaten path she created by ceaselessly walking the halls of Memory Care and for her participation in music sessions, especially with Dave the Music Man. Her favorite song was "God Bless America."

Kit is survived by four step-children, Mike Shane (Carolyn) of Cincinnati, Susan Sautermeister (Rainer) of Ridgeland, MS, Patricia Shane (Dave) of Chapel Hill, NC, and Ann Frick (David) of Indianapolis. She was the proud grandmother of Kathy Shane Fox (David) of Franklin, TN, Kevin Shane of Savannah, GA, Adam Shane of Cincinnati, OH, Danielle Sautermeister Stephens (Chad) of Dallas, TX, Matt Bowers (Crystal) of Hillsborough, NC, Lisa Bowers Bohn (Tim) of Jonesboro, AR, Thomas Frick (Caroline Wong) of Vancouver, BC, and Amy Frick Longoria (René) of Indianapolis. She leaves great-grandchildren Allison and Andrew Fox, Kendrick and Aviendha Shane, Charlie and Georgia Stephens, Samson and Chloe Bowers, Eli and Wyatt Bohn, Ella, Sydney, Jillianne, Danielle (Zach) Stevens, Tony and Kara (Suz)
Longoria, and Audrey, Ava and Arden Wong-Frick. Kit also leaves several great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and Scottish cousins.

Kit spent the last twelve years of her life in Memory Care at The Forum in Indianapolis. The family is grateful for the many years of excellent care provided by Christina, Mable, Becky, Angela, the team in Healthcare, and the kind and loving people of Heart to Heart Hospice.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Alzheimer's research or another charity of choice.

Dr. Ron McTavish wrote on Aug 28, 2017:

"Kit and I shared our early years growing up as full cousins in the Hamilton area of Scotland. There was only six months between us. Kit had enormous vitality and I never met anyone with greater artistic talent. I was a frequent visitor to Aunt Peg, her mother, in whose house we had many a good time with other cousins and friends. I felt a great gap when she left for America, but I managed to visit her there. This is a great tragedy and loss, and I will always remember Kate, as I called her. Ronni."
