John J. Riordan, 81, of Monmouth, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday morning, August 8, 2017, at the Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa, Iowa.

A private family gathering will be held in his honor at a later date. A natural journey farewell with cremation has taken place and burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Sabula. The Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family.

John James Riordan was born on May 3, 1936 in Jackson County, Iowa, to John F. and Gertrude (Elliott) Riordan. He grew up in Jackson County and was a veteran of the U.S. Army earning an honorable discharge. He married Shirley Moellenhoff on May 4, 1968 in Savanna, Illinois. She preceded him in death on October 4, 2012.

John had first worked for Rosenberg Auto Supply in Maquoketa for many years. He then owned and operated Riordan's Sales and Salvage in Preston from 1974 to 1991. From 1991 to 1994 he owned and operated J.C. Enterprise and Cafe in Sabula. In 2002 he moved to Monmouth and worked for Wady's in Maquoketa as a welder until retiring in 2012.

John enjoyed going to the boat, auctions, thrift stores, puzzles and to Bill's Tap in Maquoketa on occasion.

He is survived by his children, Tolly (Pam) Howell of Maquoketa, IA, Wendy (Marty) Walsh of Maquoketa, IA, Dean Riordan of Monmouth, IA, Mary (Terry) Brooks of Oxford Junction, IA, and Lorna (Gregg) O'Bryant of Sabula, IA; a sister Grace Dague of Maquoketa, IA; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, 4 brothers, 2 sisters, and a son Shawn Riordan.
