(Vera) Joan Mathers

Vera Joan Mathers, 85, of New London, died Saturday, August 19, 2017 at New London Specialty Care. She was born April 27, 1932 in LaCrosse, Illinois, to James H. and Mildred Thompson Crabill. July 15, 1950, Joan married William Mathers in New London. She was a 1950 graduate of New London High School and later was school board secretary for New London Schools for over 20 years. She also worked at Sylvania before owning and operating Mathers Variety in New London. Joan was a member of New London Christian Church. She enjoyed cross- stitch, biking and playing cards.
Mrs. Mathers is survived by her husband of New London; sister Donna Smith of Mt. Pleasant; brothers, Ken (Joann) Crabill of Keosauqua; and Don (Carol) of Redbud, Illinois; sisters-in-law; Jan Crabill and Marvel Crabill both of Mt. Pleasant and Marilyn Crabill of Lomax, Illinois; and nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Jim, Dean and John; and one infant sister, Doris.
The memorial service for Mrs. V. Joan Mathers will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, August 24th at Elliott Chapel. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM with the family receiving friends one hour prior to the service. Pastor Rod Cooper will officiate. Inurnment will be held at Burge Cemetery at a later date. A memorial has been established for New London Christian Church.
