Charles A. "Chuck" Richmond,
71, of Indianapolis, departed this life at his home on Wednesday, August 30, 2017. He was born November 26, 1945 in Chicago, IL to the late United States Surgeon General, Dr. Julius and Rhee (Chidekel) Richmond. Chuck enjoyed his childhood days in Syracuse, New York. He would earn his under graduate degree from Alfred University in New York and then earned dual master's degrees in Health Administration and Public Administration in Urban Planning at Temple University in Philadelphia. Chuck wasn't quite satisfied from an educational standpoint, and continued his educational enrichment by earning a law degree from IUPUI.
He was a kind and gentle soul who appreciated making memories with family and friends and engaging others in meaningful conversation. Chuck was especially dedicated to the development of youth in our community. He established the North Central Panther Youth Basketball League, which has been serving youth of Washington Township since 1994. Chuck was a board member and general manager of the Eric Gordon AAU basketball program while also serving on the board of directors for the Bryce Mitchell Memorial Fund.
Chuck was the original president of the board of directors for the Ronald McDonald House. He was instrumental in establishing the Indianapolis Ronald McDonald House in 1982. Chuck continued to dutifully and compassionately serve on the board of directors until his death. In 1999 he was bestowed the Indiana Jefferson Award for his public service, and in 2014, he was presented the Mike Vogel Humanitarian Award.
Chuck served Riley Children's Hospital as assistant director and associate administrator. He then worked at the National Institute of Fitness & Sport as vice president of administration and then practiced independent law.
In addition to his parents, Chuck was preceded in death by his brother Dale Richmond. Chuck is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Jean Richmond; his devoted son and daughter-in-law, Josh and Mandy Richmond; his loving granddaughter, Juliana Richmond; his dear brother, Barry (Anne) Richmond and a host of grateful colleagues, youth athletes and families who needed a helping hand.
A celebration of Chuck's life will be held on Saturday, September 9th at Leppert Mortuary - Nora Chapel beginning at 2:00pm and concluding with remarks at 5:00 pm. "Chuck was a dear friend. You could approach him at anytime about anything and kew that your confidence would not be breached. He was a gentle man a caring man. A man that didn't see differences in people. He held a great love for all people regardless of race , creed, or color. I often remember his words of wisdom coupled with his extensive vocabulary. He always knew what to say and how to say it. Chuck was a great person someone that I'll never forget. May you rest in peace."

"Chuck had the most generous and philanthropic spirit of anyone I know. I got to know Chuck as a coach in the Panther League and witnessed his tireless work to make basketball a character-building and fun experience for kids. We became friends, and so I was delighted when he agreed to handle the legal work for the Basa Village Foundation, which I founded and does culturally sensitive development projects in Nepal. Chuck refused to charge any fees for the many legal hours he spent to help make the BVF a success. Many families in the Basa area of Nepal will never know how they benefited from Chuck's generosity, which was critical in the development of their schools, water and electrical systems, and the other projects funded by the BVF. I always enjoyed telling the many civic groups I have spoken to about the BVF how our attorney never charged a penny for his work, so we could truthfully claim that 100% of donations went to our projects and not to professional fees and overhead. Yes, there was an honest, loving, and generous attorney. I will miss my friend, Chuck."

"Jean and Josh, I was shocked and saddened over the loss of my friend, mentor and General Counsel, Chuck Richmond. A crucial patner in establishing the foundation of my companies that we developed over the past 12 years, over a cup of coffee at the Nora Starbucks. A Community Leader and one EXCEPTIONAL HUMAN BEING! It's hard to imagine he won't be around any more to offer his advice, or wag his finger at me when I screwed something up. I am looking forward to finishing....what we started. In me and countless others, Cjuck's spirit will endure....forever."

"Thank you for sharing Chuck with us here at North Central. I am a better person from knowing Chuck and we often shared a laugh or two together before games on many occasions. One of the best laughs we we had came from our "discussions" to become law partners! "
