MADISON Alice M. (Goblirsch) Dorn, age 89, died on Saturday, September 10, 2017 after living with Multiple Myeloma for 10 years. She was born on May 1, 1928 in Sleepy Eye, MN, the daughter of Frank and Clara (Sellner) Goblirsch. She graduated in 1945 from St. Mary's High School in Sleepy Eye and went on to attend the Sacred Heart Nursing School in Yankton, SD, where she received her RN in 1948. After a brief time working near home, Alice enlisted in the US Air Force to serve as flight nurse with the 801st Medical Air Evacuation wing. There she earned her Air Medal and Korean Service Medal while evacuating wounded soldiers from the Korean War from 1951-52. After her tour of duty, Alice moved to Milwaukee, WI where she attended Marquette University, receiving her BS in Public Health Nursing in 1956. Soon after Alice was hired by the Dane County Health Department and moved to Madison to work as a public health nurse. One of her co-workers, Carol, set Alice up on a blind date with Carol's brother-in-law Harold Dorn. On Feb. 17, 1962, Harold and Alice were married. Alice then had a career change and became a full time mother and homemaker. In the 1980's, as the AIDS crisis began to peak, Alice re-visited her nursing background as a volunteer with (Agrace) Hospice Care, providing respite care and other services for terminally ill individuals that many others were afraid to help. She continued to provide respite care and spent time driving people to appointments for more than 30 years, often on her own, and even through her own illness.
Alice was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Parish where she was a founding member of the respite care team. She is survived by her children, Christine (Corey) Olson, Michael (Alita) Dorn, Jennifer Beyer and seven grandchildren (Cody, Andrew, Connor, Emily, Carrie, Anneka and Carly). She is also survived by her brother, the Rev. Robert Goblirsch, Sisters-in-law Darlene Dorn, Adele Goblirsch and Agnes Goblirsch, and many nieces, nephews and good friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved Harold in 2008, her parents, her sister Sr. Bertille Goblirsch (OSB), and her brothers Edwin, Eugene, Denis and Gerald as well as by most of her brothers- and sisters-in-law, and by her Granddaughter, Maria Dorn.
Alice's family would like to gratefully acknowledge the outstanding care she received from Dr. James Heun and the wonderful staff at SSM Health Dean Oncology as well as the loving, compassionate care from the people of All Saints Assisted Care and Agrace Hospice.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Mon Sept 18, 2017 at ST. THOMAS AQUINAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 602 Everglade Drive, Madison, with Fr. Bart Timmerman presiding. Burial will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call at the church from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM on Sunday Sept 17, 2017, and again from 9:30 AM until the time of the service on Monday.
