Roy J. Buitenwerf
September 13, 1920 - January 27, 2011

Roy J. Buitenwerf, age 90 of Prairie City, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Memorial services will be held on Monday, January 31, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Reformed Church of Prairie City. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 30, 2011 at Coburn Funeral Home of Prairie City from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. with family present to greet friends from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Roy Buitenwerf Memorial Fund. Memorials will be distributed to the Reformed Church Missions, Prairie City Lions Club, and the Prairie City Museum.

Roy was born September 13, 1920 in Prairie City, Iowa the son of John and Hattie (Maassen) Buitenwerf. He was a graduate of Prairie City High School, class of 1939. Roy married Wilma Van Zee on June 23, 1944. Roy, a co-owner of Star Oil Company of Prairie City, Iowa, retired in 1976. Following his retirement, he was able to more fully enjoy his woodworking hobby. Many individuals and organizations have benefited from his talents.

Throughout the years Roy: was a member of the First Reformed Church of Prairie City where he served as deacon for many years; was a charter member of the Prairie City Lions Club; served his country in the Navy stationed in the Pacific during WWII; served on the Prairie City Council; was a member of the American Legion; and served on the Prairie City Fire Department.

Roy is survived by his wife, Wilma, of 66 years and two sons, Mark and Michael.
Mark (Eunice) and their children, Eric and Ryan (Tamara) and their children Scott, Bethany, and Judah.
Michael (Betty) and their children Tera and Tyler.
Tera (Kevin) Washpun and their children Isaac and Gavin.
Tyler (Anita) and their child, Ian
Roy is also survived by his sister Elise Horsfall. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, John and Hattie and sister, Reva Van Gorp.

His contagious laugh was heard around the house and I smile when I think of it. He had such kind words for me. I will treasure the experiences with him and the family.
