Anna Behnke was born March 30, 1904, at Van Meter, Iowa to August and Clara (Kneuper) Vaudt. She was baptized on April 10, 1904, sat Trinity Lutheran Church by Pastor Mackworth at Van Meter, Iowa. She attended country school till her parents moved to Whittemore, Iowa in 1913. She then attended St. Paul Lutheran School. She was confirmed in St. Paul Lutheran Church on March 24, 1918, by Pastor William Faulstick. She helped her parents on the farm until she married Edwin Behnke by Pastor Faulstick on August 2, 1927. They moved to Bennett, Iowa. In 1938, they moved to Westgate, Iowa. In 1945, her husband died and in 1946, Anna returned to Whittemore where she lived ever since. She was employed at area nursing homes, was the office nurse for Dr. Kenefick until he retired and worked with Geilenfeld-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Whittemore assisting with visitations. Anna was a member of St. Paul Ladies Aid, Lutheran Ladies League, Aid Association for Lutherans, member of the Women's Club, was a Kossuth County Hospital assistant and a member of the Whittemore Senior Citizens and various card clubs.
Surviving are two children, Elaine Schmeling and husband Carroll of Ralston, Nebraska and Edwin Behnke and wife Merna of Durant, Iowa. Also surviving are three grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one sister Clara Butler of Blue Earth, MN and sister-in-law Ella Vaudt of Foley, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers, Walter, August and Erwin and three sisters, Ruth Rhode, Irene Butler and Bertha Greinert.
