"To the Shoemaker family: I am one of Shirley Brancheau's daughters - Mom worked for Dr. Shoemaker for many years and he was my optometrist well into my teens. I cannot tell you what a debt of gratitude I owe Dr. Shoemaker. Many specialists at IU Med Center wanted to perform surgery on my eye, yet Dr. Shoemaker refused; instead I went through "visual training" to strengthen the eye muscles so my eye would not turn in. To this day, it does not, except when I'm very tired. I am a productive adult, with a degree from Indiana State University and am employed at Eli Lilly. I send my sincere condolences to you all. I am very sorry for your loss. He was a very nice man and an excellent optometrist. Here's a funny story for you: When I was little, during an appointment with Dr. Shoemaker, I asked him if the O.D. after his name stood for "Odd Doctor"! I can still hear his laugh! Needless to say, he never forgot that and laughed every time he saw me. My mom, I think, was a bit embarrassed. Out of the mouths of babes! You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend Dr. Shoemaker's service, as I will be leaving for vacation in Northern Michigan. With warmest regards, Sally Brancheau Belknap"
