E. J. (Julian) Cherland was born February 22, 1914, in Humboldt County, Iowa, to John T. and Ellen (Jacobson) Cherland. Julian attended country school and graduated from Lone Rock High School. On March 30, 1941, Julian was united in marriage to Ella Mae Jacobson at the St. John's Lutheran Church parsonage, Cylinder. After their marriage the couple farmed the Cherland Family farm near Burt. Julian moved to the family farm when he was age one and continued to live there to the present. He attended Farmers Evening School in Algona for many years during the winter months to keep up with the latest in agriculture. Julian was a member of Blakjer Lutheran Church, rural Fenton, until it closed in 1987, then he became a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Burt.

Julian was a very generous person, sharing with others and helping neighbors. Julian enjoyed cracking black walnuts for family and friends and donating them for area fund raisers. He also enjoyed bowling, golfing, and trapping gophers, along with sharing his Norwegian heritage with others. He made two trips back to Norway. Julian received the Key to the City of Lone Rock in 2008, and was honored as the King of Burt in 2002. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren.

Julian died on Thursday afternoon January 1, 2009, at Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona at the age of 94.

Survivors include his children, Ronald Cherland and wife, Marcia of Fairmont, Minnesota; Evelyn and husband Paul Baker of Rochester, MN; Judy and husband Steve Rieff of Onawa, IA; Janet and husband Ervin Wiltgen of Algona, IA; Marilyn Simpson of Algona, IA; 13 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and two great - great grandchildren. Also surviving is brother-in-law, Frank Long of Dakota City, Iowa and sister-in-law, Cora Jacobson of Emmetsburg, Iowa as well as special family friend Sharon Goche.

Julian was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ella Mae, brothers, Amey and Odey and sisters, Everene Cherland, Myrtle Krause, Ruby Carlson and Arlet Long, great grandson Francis Palmersheim, nephew Robert Long and niece Phyllis Rod.
