Charles Maurice Hertzke, youngest child of Paul F. and Mattie (Leigh) Hertzke, was born September 2, 1922 on the family farm in Lincoln Township northeast of Lakota. He attended country school through the 8th grade and then joined his father in farming.

Charles was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lakota. He was confirmed there and married to Charlene Stevens on June 15, 1951. They were the first couple married in the new church.

Charles, better known to family and friends as Chuck, was a kind, gentle man who never wanted an argument. He enjoyed time with friends and family, traveling and a good joke. He also enjoyed bird watching, and other aspects of Nature, especially the changing seasons. He truly enjoyed farming, especially his milk cows and hogs and was known for raising good, healthy feeder pigs. He was a member of Farm Bureau, Friends of Exceptional Opportunities and served on the Buffalo Center Creamery board.

Charles M. "Chuck" Hertzke died Saturday, September 5, 2009 at Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona at the age of 87.

He leaves to mourn his wife of 57 years, Charlene Hertzke of Algona; two sons, Steven and Mark Hertzke of Algona; a brother, Otto Hertzke and his wife Alfa of Lakota; a sister, Ruth Sheldahl and her husband Edward of Lakota; as well as many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Elsie; and two brothers, Maynard Hertzke and his wife Clara and Raymond Hertzke and his wife Pearl.
