Nancy Ann Doughan Ballard was born March 2, 1931, in Algona, Iowa, to Vincent and Margaret (Lawler) Doughan of Wesley. Nancy was raised in Wesley and graduated from Wesley High School in 1949. She attended Briar Cliff College for one year, then returned home upon the death of her mother to help care for her brothers and father. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls during the summer months. She taught in the rural schools of Hancock County, West Bend Consolidated School and Burt Community School as well as substituted in the Algona public and parochial schools. On October 1, 1955, Nancy was united in marriage to Philip L. Ballard at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley. The couple lived in Estherville for one year before moving to Algona. Phil died November 22, 1992.
Nancy was a member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona, the New Dimension and the Adoration Chapel. She was a former Guild officer, C.D. of A. member, C.C.D. teacher and Sunday school teacher. She also was a Cub Scout leader, Brownie leader and a 3rd Ward election poll worker for 46 years.
Nancy died early Saturday, November 21, 2009, at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, Minn., at age 78.
Survivors include her children, Kevin and wife Diane of Marion, Iowa; Kathleen and husband Tim Bottaro of Sioux City, Iowa; Kristen Ballard of Houston, Texas; and Kirk Ballard of Minneapolis, Minn. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Melissa Ballard of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Megan Lawrence of Wasau, Wis.; Mary Ballard of Marion, Iowa; Pat Bottaro of Sioux City, Iowa; and Anne Bottaro of Sioux City, Iowa. Nancy also is survived by two brothers, Steve Doughan of Kanawha, Iowa, and Roger and wife Betty Doughan of Hampton, Iowa. Many nieces and nephews survive, including two special nieces and one nephew who were so kind to include her in their family gatherings: Deb and Pat Rahm and Joni and Kent Haugland, all of Wesley, and Donny and Kim Doughan of Algona.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Philip.
