" My name is Leo Hair, son of Mary Dona Schumacher, and I only briefly met Uncle Sonny at my mom's house in St. Petersburg, Florida. He spoke to me of his love for Christ, as I was in Missionay work in Mexico at the time. It was also at Mom's home that Grandpa Raymond Schumacher, whom I remember fondly while staying at the Farm for a few weeks during some marital difficulties that my parents were working through when I was a small child. Grandpa would often put me on his lap and let me steer the tractor, he also took me out early in the mornings to milk the cows. I am now 60, live in So. Cal and would love to meet all of you. Wayne Francis "Sonny" Schumacher was born July 27, 1944, in Swea City, Iowa, to Ralph and Avis (Torkelson) Schumacher. He attended grade school at Presentation Academy in Whittemore and graduated from Bishop Garrigan High School in Algona. His was the first class to complete all four years in the new school. Sonny served his country in the United States Navy. Following his honorable discharge, Sonny returned to Whittemore where he farmed. On January 17, 1971, Sonny was united in marriage to Mary Hjelmeland in LuVerne, Iowa. Sonny was still farming and owned and operated Schumacher Repair when his health failed.
Sonny will be remembered as a happy person, being patient, clever, kind and the Go-To Man. He enjoyed fishing, camping, boating as well as woodworking.
Sonny died on Monday morning, September 13, 2010, at Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona at the age of 66.
Survivors include his wife Mary of Whittemore, Iowa; daughter Wanda and husband Chris Hart of Spencer, Iowa; daughter Shauna and husband Jason Snyder of Eldon, Iowa; daughter Tara and husband Jeromy Batterson of Ottumwa, Iowa and daughter JoAnn and husband Adam Smith of Ottumwa, Iowa, as well as 11 grandchildren, sisters, Martha Wagner of Algona, Iowa; Linda and husband Vern Sullivan of Rutland, Iowa; Rita and husband Doug Thorson of Surprise, Arizona and Debbie Immerfall of Mount Ayr, Iowa; and sister-in-law, Jean Schumacher of Whittemore, Iowa. Sonny was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Bob.
