Madison-Helen Marie (Check) Evert, age 93, passed away on Wednesday, October 19, 2017 at Heartland Country Village in Black Earth, WI. She was born in Eastman, WI to John and Amelia (Berntgen) Check on December 7, 1923. In order to complete her high school education, she moved in with a family in Prairie Du Chien. Upon graduation from Prairie Du Chien High School in 1941, she moved to Lodi, WI with her lifelong friend Rita LaMere (Nobel). She helped her uncle run his café (The Modern Café). It was there when she met the love of her life, Wallace "Wally" Evert. During their engagement, Wally received his orders to serve in WWII. She took a train from Lodi to Camp White in Malin, Oregon where Wally was stationed. They had a double wedding ceremony, with their good friends John and Marion Clemens, on December 31, 1942. They were married for 56 years until Wally's passing on April 26, 1998.
Helen was a member of St. Peters Church in Madison, WI. She enjoyed playing card games (Euchre, 500 and Bridge). She and Wally were active in Square, Ballroom and Round dancing, as well as golfing and bowling. She worked at Central Wisconsin Colony for 27 years and retired in 1986.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Amelia Check; her husband, Wally; two sisters, Thelma Zimmer and Esther Hamann; brother, Robert Check; five brothers-in-law, Ralph, LeRoy and Russell Evert, Brownie Hamann and Ed Zimmer; five sisters-in-law, Florence, Viola, Cora and Claire Evert and Janice Check.
Helen is survived by her three children, Dale (Jan) Evert, Sandra (Tom) Larson and Karen (Denny) Hilgendorf; six grandchildren, Rebecca (Dean) Kolden, Eric (Diane) Evert, Mathew (Leigh Ann) Larson, Michael (Dana) Larson, Ann (Joel) Mulvaney and Amy Hilgendorf Olson; seventeen great-grandchildren, Blair, Andrew, Lindsey, Kayla, Christopher, Samari, Zach, Makenzie, Anissa, Garrett, Ty, Drew, Jed, Megan, Noah, Shelby and Jerron (JC); three great-great-grandchildren, Kaden, Braydin and Bentleigh; sister-in-law, Viola Evert; two brothers, Bill and Jack Check; two sisters, Mildred and Dorothy Zimmerman; as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Heartland Country Village in Black Earth for the love and care Helen received, as well as the friends and family who visited her during her stay at Heartland.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00a.m. at WINDSOR UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 4434 2nd St, Windsor, WI on Thursday, October 26, 2017, with Rev. David McDonald presiding. Visitation will be from 10:00a.m. to 11:00a.m. A luncheon will follow the service at the church. A Christian burial, for family members, will take place at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Lodi, WI.
