After driving truck for many years, Tom opened Carrigan Tire Repair in Emmetsburg before moving his business to Cylinder, Iowa and opening Cylinder Tire Repair until his retirement. All of his patrons knew Tom was in if "Ol' Yeller" (Tom's '67 GMC pickup) was parked out front.

On Tuesday, October 24, 2017, Tom passed away at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

"I was very honored to be bridesmaid in Tom and Roxie's wedding. I have many fond memories of giving Tom a hard time on the phone when I would call to chat with Roxie. Jim and I will really miss Tom in our travels to Emmetsburg to visit Roxie who is my very best friend."
