Mary Manitaras
April 12, 1923 - November 30, 2017

The heart and soul of our family, Mary Manitaras, 94, passed away surrounded by her loving family, on Thursday, November 30, 2017. Mary was born on April 12, 1923 in Southampton, NY to Demetri and Panagiota Pappas. She returned to her homeland, Greece, in early childhood and in 1944, she married her long-time love, Theodore Manitaras. Soon after WWII, she returned to New York, determined to give her family a better life with endless opportunities. Mary and Theodore raised four daughters in New York and Colorado, and she worked tirelessly to provide for her family. Upon her retirement, she moved to Portland, Oregon. Mary had a love of learning, cooking traditional Greek cuisine, traveling, and spending quality time with her loved ones. Mary was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Demetri and Panagiota; her brother, George; her sisters, Katina and Ellie; and her husband, Theodore. Mary is survived by her daughters: Helen and husband Ben, Peggy and husband John, Nicky, and Carol; her grandchildren: Nina and husband Joe, Nicolas and wife Brianna, Michael, Marianne, Courteney and husband George, and Christina; and her great grandchildren: Alexander, Lucia, Zoe, and Benjamin. Funeral services will be privately held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to the International Orthodox Christian Charities (https://www.iocc.org/); Doctors Without Borders (http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/); DonorsChoose (DonorsChoose.org); or a charity dear to your heart.
