"Dear Julie, Rachel and Danielle, I am so very shocked and saddened to learn that your dear husband and father Mike passed away. My heart breaks for you all. Mike always seemed so full of life, so healthy and happy -- he made me feel better just to be around him! I loved Mike's smile, his love of sports and sportsmanship, his strong handshake and infectious personality. I know he adored you three, and his highest calling was being a wonderful husband and father. He succeeded. But gosh, he just wasn't here on earth nearly long enough. It is my hope and prayer that your many wonderful memories of Mike, the love and support of all of your family and friends, and the Great Assurance that Mike now resides in Heaven helps to comfort you and soften the edges of your grief. Mike was truly a Good Man. May he rest in God's peace. Dr. Tom Stark "

Chris Schmale wrote on Dec 13, 2017:

"Julie and Family:I'm so sorry. I'm at a loss for words as I struggle to wrap my mind around this personally and imagine what you are going through right now. When the weather was nice I would always see Mike walking the dogs in the neighborhood and we would stop and chat, and lately over the last year or two we would often be working out together side by side (when i was at the gym). He was there everyday, and we would always talk about sports, and specifically the Chicago Blackhawks. We had some good and fun conversations. On a larger scale I will remember Mike for just his overall goodness, his kindness, and his caring, upbeat personality. It was infectious and everyone who he came in touch with is better because of it. As he helped you coach our daughters in softball ( a long time ago) he was so great with the kids, and those memories will live on. He truly was a coach and teacher, and he truly cared about everybody. It is always hard for someone on the outside to say or do anything to help or comfort you and your family. All I can say is that as someone who has gone through loss, and specifically someone who has gone through loss at this time of the year multiple times, I send my support and love and prayers to you. God and your love for one another will see you through. I hope that you know that our thoughts and prayers are with you, and that you feel the love and support that you have from your family, your close friends and the community. My best memory of Mike is that he was just a good man, who made everybody's day a little better and a little brighter, and that is a legacy we should all hope to achieve. Our thoughts and prayers and love are with you today and always. Regards, Chris Schmale and Family"

Melinda Rose wrote on Dec 13, 2017:

"Dearest Mallas family. This is Mike's cousin Melinda Rose, Mike's mother is my Dad's first cousin. Our family used to visit Iowa sometimes in the summer and stay with our Nana Burris, and would also see our cousins, to include Mike. I was very young at the time. The last time i saw Mike was in the late 70's or early 80's, he and some family came to DC and we had a nice but brief visit. A sweet memory of Mike was seeing a picture of him taken in Boone, Iowa at my Nana's house (his Great Aunt Mary) when my Mom and sister came for a visit and brought along Nana's grandson (my nephew Jon) . Evidently Mike and Jon hit if off because Jon was sitting right with Mike, like they were buddies. :-) I was so very saddened to hear of his passing, and I promise to keep you all in my prayers, for God's strength to carry you through.. Sincerely, Melinda Rose (cousin)"
