Oney Mahoney

Oney L. Mahoney, 86 of Keokuk, died early, Tuesday, July 01, 2008 at Keokuk Area Hospital.

Mr. Mahoney was born November 25, 1921 in Hannibal, Missouri the son of Daniel and Hazel Rudd Mahoney. He married Mary Atterberg on November 17, 1944 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. She preceded him in death on January 31, 2001.

He was a resident of Keokuk for many years. He was a farmer for ten years. He did construction work for ten years and worked at Keokuk National Cemetery for ten years. He was in the Marines during War II as a Private First Class. His most important item was serving in the United States Marine Corps during WWII, or, Tarawa and Receiving the Purple Heart while on Saipan. He was a member of the Catholic Faith. He was one of the original organizers of the Keokuk Labor Unions. He loved to fish, play cards and watch the St. Louis Cardinals play. He loved spending time with his family, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and his dog "Charlie".

He is survived by five daughters: Carolyn Knezevich and her husband Mike of Marshalltown, Iowa; Cynthia Knisley and her husband Allan of Keokuk, Iowa; Peggy Sutton and her husband Bob of Warsaw, Illinois; Oneda Roberts and her husband Ralph of Keokuk, Iowa; Terry Welker and her husband Chris of Murfreesboro, Tennessee
Two sons: Michael Mahoney and his wife Kathie of Keokuk, Iowa; Patrick Mahoney and his wife Pam of Keokuk, Iowa; seventeen grandchildren: Greg Knezeivch and Pete Knezevich, Phil Knisley, Gina McGinnis, Shellie Schilson, Darcie Knisley, Scott Sutton, Scott Roberts, Breezy Roberts, Annie Fullenton, Dan Mahoney, Tyler Mahoney, Travis Mahoney, Gabe Welker, Chris Gellatly, Jennifer Gellatly, Heather Gellatly; twenty great grandchildren; one brother: Elmer Mahoney of Keokuk, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one daughter in infancy, four brothers, and one sister.

Funeral services were Thursday, July 3, 2008, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Deacon William Cosgrove officiating. Burial followed at Keokuk National Cemetery with full military rites.

Memorials may be made to New Testament Christian Church.
