Verne Notestein

L. Verne Notestein, 93, of Keokuk, died Monday evening, August 18, 2008, at Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab in Stronghurst, Illinois.
Mr. Notestein was born November 7, 1914, in Memphis, Missouri, the son of William Earl "Bill" and Mary Maude Cunningham Notestein. He had lived in Keokuk since 1924 and graduated from Keokuk High School in 1932. He married Evelyn Alpha Eliasen on June 2, 1935 in Ft. Madison, Iowa. She preceded him in death on September 5, 1980.
Verne served in the United States Navy during World War II. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 37 years, retiring in 1973 as a superintendent. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Keokuk, American Legion Post #41 for over sixty years, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #106, National Association of Federal Employees, and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Association.

He is survived by a daughter, Janice Bruggerman of Hogansville, Georgia; three sons, Jens Notestein and his wife, Amy, of Stronghurst, Illinois, Jon Notestein and his wife, Jeanne, of North Augusta, South Carolina and Jeffrey Notestein of Alsip, Illinois; twelve grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and three nieces and three nephews

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jerry L. Notestein on April 24, 1974; and four sisters, Ruth Juanita Kiser, Mary Madeline Magoon, Elouise Notestein and Anna Earlene Lee.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 22, 2008 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Pastor Kimberly Riebe officiating. Burial with military rites was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church.
