Penny Sue "Mortimer" Hale, 56, of Keokuk, Iowa, passed away at 7:40 a.m., August 9, 2010 at University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa.
She was born on August 7, 1954, in Keokuk, the daughter of Laroy "Jack" and Sharon Varner Mortimer. She was engaged to Howard Braddock.
She graduated from Keokuk High School. She lived most of her life in Keokuk with living some of her years in Toledo, Ohio. She loved to play cards, bingo, crocheting and loved her grandchildren. She was great telling ghost stories. She was the second of nine children. For a short period of time in her life she drove a semi and she really loved and enjoyed driving anytime.
She is survived by her daughter, Renea Glenn of Keokuk, Iowa; son, Nathan Mortimer and his wife Christy of Ft. Madison, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Hailey, Gerald, Scott, Keagan, Korben, Larry, Brittney, Michael; father, Laroy (Jack) Mortimer of Keokuk, Iowa; eight brothers and sisters, Becky Mortimer and her husband Mike, of Ottumwa, Iowa; Larry Mortimer and his wife Carol of Keokuk, Iowa; Sidney Mortimer and his wife Christine of Hamilton, Illinois; Marty Mortimer and his wife Rose of Ainsworth, Iowa; Rick Mortimer and wife Debbie of Donnellson, Iowa; John Mortimer and his wife Wendy of Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin; Karen Dietrich and her husband Phil of Fowler, Illinois; Diana Lang and her husband Luke of Huntersville, North Carolina; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, material grandparents and paternal grandparents.
Funeral services were Monday, August 16, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at DeJong's Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Davis officiating. Burial followed at Hickory Grove, Keokuk, Iowa.
Memorials have been established.

"We all knew Penny on her good days and her bad days. She always tried to be optimistic and cared deeply for her caregivers. She cared about the other patients and even made some of them afghans to keep them warm while they were on treatment. She always brought in my mail for me and she was never asked to do that. We all know she loved her family and spoke very highly of her grandkids. That is what kept her going.
